SLNSynchronous Learning Networks
  • Same-time, Same Place
  • Kindergarten Show and Tell
  • Learn by discovery in groups
  • In-class discussions coordinated by Instructor
  • Student-student, student-instructor Interaction,
    Interactive Demos, Simulations?
  • Same Time, at a Distance
  • Streaming Video/Video Conferencing
  • PC-based ISDN, H.32x, ATM Solution
  • 2-way audio, 1-way video, 2-way audio
  • Interactivity?

6
What is ALN?
  • Asynchronous
  • Not at the same time
  • Not at the same place
  • Distance Education (Teaching,Learning)
  • (real-time or delayed TV, 2/w Audio Video)
  • Some early examples
  • Correspondence courses, books, audio tapes, Video
Tapes via snail mail or courier
  • Not new...but now information (not physical
    media) delivered via the Internet.

7
What is ALN?
  • Learning
  • Cognition - How do people learn best
  • Teaching and Learning Styles matched?
  • Synchronous Learning
  • Central Institution of Learning - The University
  • Professor and student in same time and space
  • Benefits of physical presence Interactivity
  • Our aim in Lectures on Demand in ALN
  • Construct a learning environment using
information technology which enhances and mimics
    effective interactive and collaborative
    synchronous learning networks

8
What is ALN?
  • Networks
  • of computers?

9
What is ALN?
  • From the ALN Web http//www.aln.org
  • ALN is a network of people facilitating learning
that is largely asynchronous. It combines
    self-study with substantial, rapid, asynchronous
    interactivity with others.
  • Frank Mayadas http//www.sloan.org
  • Learning Outside the Classroom - ALN
  • On-campus, Near-to-campus Far-from-campus
  • Sloan Funding single course, degrees, system-wide

Some major issues in ALN
  • Quality of ALN courses, Accreditation
  • What has made the great institutions of learning?
  • Greatest resource and asset World class faculty-
    combined scholarship, teaching and research.
  • Instructors must add value!
  • System of education, high standards of
    excellence.
  • Make better traditional in-class teachers
  • Synchronous Learning Networks.
  • Collaborative, Active Learning.
  • Learn it best by teaching it
  • Questions-participation-exploit the physical
    presence.

Quality of ALN courses
  • Will Good ALN Courses make the professor
    redundant? Self-obsolescence?
  • Those who are worried that they will be replaced
by a computer - should perhaps be!
  • Must add value - updating ALN courses regularly.
  • Traditional non-interactive lectures do a very
    bad job at teaching!
  • Poor quality teaching of any type does not work!!!

Lecture vs Teacher
  • The teacher has not taught if the student has not
    learned..
  • Value added by Instructor by what the Instructor
    says and does
  • Facilitator or learning-motivate, excite, provide
    insight, practical realism, research perspective
    personal enthusiasm infections
  • interactive class sessions, mini group activities
  • sensitivity to different learning styles
  • The mechanics of learning, cognition-all senses
  • Need for instructional Designer, Peer Review in
    ALN

Haniph A. Latchman--
University of Florida ICEE99
22
Another Issue Time and effort to develop ALN
courses
  • Many good instructors teach in a prepared,
structured but spontaneous and adaptive manner.
  • Resistance to canned lectures
  • Demand on faculty to change their mode of
    teaching-suppress spontaneity
  • Make it easy, reliable and proven-not left to
    chance

Haniph A. Latchman--
University of Florida ICEE99
23
Time and Effort to Develop and Offer ALN Courses
  • Lectures on Demand-Ease of Development of ALN
    materials
  • Direct incorporation of the spoken, written and
other facets of natural communication of the
    instructor into the ALN mix
  • Post-production of supporting ALN
    materials-possibly with student assistance
  • Students teach each other-less instructor
    intervention(e.g. E-mail slave.)

Careful and Effective Use of IT
  • Johannes Gutenbeg-Printing press
  • Color printing with images
  • Sound, video communications
  • Interactive graphics - simulations - virtual
    reality
  • MediaPrint, Video, Audio
  • Information-digital information(IT)
  • Incorporate all of these in ALN Lectures on
    Demand
  • New electronic interactive multimedia books
  • or learning resources, simulations, etc.

How it All Works
  • Web page reference URL to content
  • Server sends metafile to browser
  • Browser sends metafile contents to player
  • Player reads contents and requests it directly
    from server
  • Server streams the presentation
  • Player plays the presentation
