2Larger Toters Boost Recycling(2003 data source
SWANCC)
Many municipalities in DuPage and Cook county
have replaced their 20-gallon recycling bins with
larger toters and in doing so have found a
significant increase in the communitys recycling
rate. Notable 3 month increases in recycling
volume resulting from the switch to a toter
program are detailed below
Bin Program

3When Using the Village Toter, Make Sure You..
- DO NOT overfill the toter so the lid cant
close - DO NOT exceed the toters 150 lb. weight limit
- DO NOT bag (plastic or paper) your recyclables
- SET OUT the toter so its front faces the street
- KEEP a 3 ft. clearance on all sides of the toter
- FLATTEN boxes cardboard into 2 x 2 squares
- DO NOT place excess recyclables on the toters
lid - CALL (630) 261-0578 if you have excess recycling.
4Benefits of Toter Service
Helps reduce incidence of blowing litter and in
doing so Keeps Carol Stream Sparkling. Protects
recyclables from contamination from the elements.
Materials more valuable when sold on the
commodities markets. Reduces overall refuse
costs by diverting more refuse from distant
landfills. The volume of the toter is sized for
the amount of recyclables generated by an average
family.
5Toter Service Automated Collection
The current model recycling collection truck is
equipped with a Grabber Arm, which picks up
containers from 30 gallons to 300 gallons without
slipping or crushing. Optional articulation gives
the truck more flexibility, allowing the operator
to maneuver around obstacles such as trees and
mailboxes, or to pick up several containers at
one stop without moving the vehicle. This
feature alone helps save fuel, time and truck
wear-and-tear.
6What do I do with 20-Gallon
Blue Recycling Bin(s)??
- For families that use the Village-supplied bin,
it WILL BE COLLECTED on your designated pick up
day and replaced with a 65-gallon toter sometime
in late Dec. 2005. - Households that purchased an additional bin(s)
with their own funds MAY KEEP that bin(s) for
personal use as the new automated recycling
collection trucks are not designed and engineered
to service the smaller size bins.
7Toters are Property of the Village
- Please note that the 65-gallon recycling toters
are to remain at your address as they are
property of the Village of Carol Stream. -
- It is advised that upon receiving your toter, you
write with indelible marker on the underside of
the lid, your propertys address.
8With the New Toter ProgramNo Need to Sort
Recyclables
- The toter program ALLOWS MATERIALS TO BE
COMINGLED. Paper and non-paper items no longer
need to be sorted separately. Do not put
recyclables in plastic bags! - Cardboard needs to be cut into 2 X 2 SQUARES
so it does not get jammed in the cart and
prevent it and other items from being emptied. - RECYCLABLES PLACED OUTSIDE THE CART will not be
collected as collection is now automated.
965- Gallon Toter Dimensions
- Height w/ Lid - 40.58 inches
- Width 26.70 inches
- Depth 28.11 inches
- Residents with 1 car garages are going to need to
pre-plan so your new 65-gallon cart can fit in
your garage.
