National Curriculum Levels
  • A Simple Guide!

After Foundation Stage comes Key Stage One

    following the National Curriculum guidelines.
  • Some children will still be working below these
levels we call these P levels as they are PRE
    National Curriculum

In KS1 children move up the levels from P, into
Level 1, then up to 2 and sometimes 3-in this
order.
  • P1 P8
  • Level 1c, then 1b, then 1a
  • Level 2c, then 2b, then 2a
  • Level 3c
  • When they move to KS2 they continue to work
through the levels, up to Level 4 or 5
  • At Secondary they continue up to Level 8.

Remember these levels are only a guideline
children develop and make progress at different
rates.
  • Within each level, there are a number of
    objectives which children are taught.
  • You will find these objectives in the front of
your childs new reading record book. This
document will tell you what your child is
    currently working on.

Reading at different levels
  • Level 1 - They recognise some words and relate
sounds to letters. Sometimes they need support.
They can say what they like and dislike about a
    book.
  • Level 2 - They can read simple books accurately
and express their opinions about them. They use a
range of strategies when reading sounds
looking at pictures knowledge of spelling
patterns reading unknown words by thinking
    about what makes sense.
  • Level 3 - Pupils read a range of texts fluently
    and independently, using appropriate strategies.
They understand the main points of texts and
express preferences. They use their knowledge of
the alphabet to locate books and find information

Writing at different levels
  • Level 1-They communicate meaning through words
and sounds and demonstrate awareness of how full
stops are used. Letters are clearly formed.
  • Level 2 -They communicate meaningfully using
interesting vocabulary and showing awareness of
the reader. They can write a sequence of
sentences sometimes using capitals and full
stops. Spellings are phonetically plausible, e.g.
    woz.
  • Level 3 -Different types of writing are organised
and imaginative. Ideas are extended logically in
sentences and words are chosen for variety and
interest. Grammar and spelling is mostly accurate
in simple sentences. Full stops, capitals and
    question marks are used.
