4 types of sentences (Sentence structure)
  • Simple
  • Compound
  • Complex
  • Compound-complex

Simple Sentences
  • contain one independent clause and no subordinate
    clauses
  • can have a single or compound subject or
    predicate or both
  • Examples-
  • The music blared from the radio.
  • The music blared and resounded in the empty room.

Compound Sentences
  • This consists of two or more independent clauses
    joined together
  • These clauses both express complete thoughts.

Connectors for compound sentences
  • Can be joined by a comma and coordinating
    conjunction
  • and, but, for, nor, or, so, yet
  • Sample
  • I always enjoy going to the beach, but
    sometimes I do not like the sand.

Connectors for compound sentences
  • Sometimes (rarely) the comma can be omitted from
    a compound sentence if the clauses are very
    short.

  • I wept and I wept.

Semicolons can also be used to connect clauses in
a compound sentence. Sample I am sorry for
my mistake I am really sorry I said anything.

Complex Sentences
  • contain one independent clause and one or more
    subordinate clauses.
  • independent clause expresses a complete thought.
  • subordinate clause does not express a complete
    thought and starts with a subordinate conjunction

Subordinate Clauses
  • can come at the beginning- Although you are my
    friend, I cant come to your party.
  • can come in the middle-
  • Sarah, whom you met at the party, was very
    nice.
  • can come at the end-
  • Yes, I had a good time because you were
    there.

Compound-Complex Sentences
  • contains two or more independent clauses and one
    or more subordinate clauses.
  • Is a compound sentence a complex sentence
  • Sample
  • Because I brought Ms. Cross flowers, she smiled
    and she gave me a hug.

  • After, although, as, as far as, as if, as long
    as, as soon as, as though, because, before,
    considering (that), even if, even though, if,
    inasmuch as, in order that, provided (that),
    since, so long as, so that, than, though, unless,
    until, when, whenever, where, wheras, wherever,
    while
