Vectors and Scalars

• Vector Quantity - requires both size and
  direction
• Scalar Quantity - requires only size

Vectors

• Vectors use arrows to indicate their size and
  direction.
• The length of the arrow is in scale to the size
  of the vector.
• The direction of the arrow is the direction of
  the vector.

Vectors at Right Angles

• The resultant vector of two perpendicular vectors
  is the diagonal of the rectangle constructed with
  the two vectors as sides.

Finding the Resultant Vector

• 1. Draw the two vectors with their tails
  touching.
• 2. From the end of each vector, draw a line
  parallel to the other vector forming a rectangle.
• 3. Draw the diagonal starting in the corner
  where the two tails are touching

Resolving Vectors

• Replacing a single vector with two vectors at
  right angles to each other.

Vector Resolution

• 1. Vertical and horizontal lines are drawn from
  the tail of a vector.
• 2. A rectangle is drawn that encloses the vector
  as it diagonal.
• 3. The sides of the rectangle are the two
  component vectors starting at the tail of the
  first vector.
