In the beginning
  • John Warnock Hinckley, Jr. was born in Ardmore,

Vanderbilt Energy Corporation. Hinckley was no
    stranger to money.

To Graduation and Beyond!
  • In 1973, Hinckley graduated from high school.
  • In the fall of 73 he attended Texas Tech.
  • However, after his freshman year Hinckley went to
live with his sister in California.

5
Johns Favorites
  • Hinckley loved the music of the Beatles. He used
to sit in his room and listen to them.
  • He saw Taxi Driver fifteen times in one summer.
Some say it was this movie that inspired him to
    do what he did.

6
Turning to the dark side
  • In 1976, Hinckley went to Hollywood to become a
songwriter. He wrote home about a fake
    girlfriend.
  • In August of 1979 Hinckley purchased his first
    gun.
  • By 1980 he had given in to his parents requests
and was taking anti-depressants and tranquilizers.

7
Nowhere to go but down
  • In May of 1980 Hinckley enrolled in a writing
course at Yale so he could be close to Jodie
Foster, the actress from Taxi Driver.
  • In the fall of 1980 Hinckley decided to stalk
    President Carter.
  • He was stopped in an airport on the way to one of
Carters events and found to have handguns in his
possession. He was fined and released.

8
He hit rock bottom
  • On March 29, 1981 Hinckley went to a labor
convention that President Ronald Reagan was
attending. He stepped through the wall of
reporters and fired six shots in Reagans
direction. One of the bullets hit Reagan on the
left side of his chest. He also hit three other
    government officials.
  • Hinckley was immediately arrested. He was later
determined insane and placed in St. Elizabeths
    Mental Hospital.

9
In the news
  • Now, 22 years later, a hospital psychiatrist says
Hinckley should be allowed to make unsupervised
trips to see his parents. They live in
Williamsburg, VA. The psychiatrist says, if done
gradually, Hinckley should be able to travel
alone by the end of a time period. Later on,
Hinckley would like to stay overnight.
