Title: What can you find in an ecosystem

1
What can you find in an ecosystem?
  • (lets all just get along)

2
Lets review.what is the biosphere?
  • All of the organisms that live on the earth make
    up the biosphere
  • Why are we talking about the biosphere again???
  • In Unit 2 we learned about the spheres of the
Earth. The biosphere is presented here in more
detail. Lets review what the biosphere
    encompasses

3
What is an organism?
  • A living thing is referred to as an organism
  • Can you think of some examples?
  • What groups do they belong to?

4
What is an ecosystem?
  • The living organisms and their non-living
environment in a specific area is called an
    ecosystem
  • This includes ABIOTIC and BIOTIC factors.
  • What do you think ABIOTIC and BIOTIC means?

5
BIOTIC FACTORS
  • bio life
  • the biotic factors in an ecosystem are the living
    things
  • Examples bacteria in the soil, insects, mammals
    etc

6
ABIOTIC FACTORS
  • a not or without
  • (in other words without life)
  • all of the non-living components of an
    ecosystem
  • Examples air, rocks, water, soil, climate, light
    availability topography etc.

7
What is a niche?
  • All of the roles and relationships of an organism
    within its habitat
  • This includes
  • what the organism eats
  • what eats the organism
  • how it changes the environment etc.

8
What is a species?
  • After the larger groups (domains, kingdoms, etc)
are completely divided the smallest type of group
    is called a species
  • Members of the same species group can mate and
produce FERTILE offspring (fertile able to
    reproduce)

9
What does it mean to have fertile offspring?
  • Fertile offspring can have babies of their own
  • Example a pug and a Rottweiler could have
fertile puppies (strange but true).therefore the
pug and Rottweiller are the same species

10
What does it mean to have fertile offspring?
  • Example A horse and a donkey can mate and
produce an offspring known as a mule
  • However, the mule is sterile (it can not
    reproduce)
  • Therefore horse and donkeys belong to different
    species

11
Lions and Tigers (and bears) OH MY!
  • Ligers are the result of a lion dad and a tiger
    mom.
  • Tigons are the result of a tiger dad and a lion
    mom
  • Female Ligers and Tigons are fertile, while male
    Ligers and Tigons are sterile
  • What does this say about lions and tigers as
    separate species?

12
What is a population?
  • All of the members of the same species in a
    specific geographic area or time
  • Which is bigger.a population or a species?

13
Population or Species
  • Flamingos
  • Flamingos in Orlando, FL
  • Lions in the Central Park Zoo
  • Lions in Africa
  • Poison Ivy
  • Blue Whales in 1947
  • E. Coli
  • Amoebas in a pond

14
What is a community?
  • The total of all the populations in an ecosystem
the living part of the ecosystem
  • What is a habitat?
  • A specific place an organism lives is its
habitat. Every habitat has specific biotic and
abiotic factors organisms need to survive. The
desert habitat has different factors than the
    grassland or the forest.
