• Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries
• A non-profit consortium of 11 libraries founded
  in 1974. 501c3
• History of innovation
• CARL ILS (sold in 1995) now TLC
• UnCover (sold in 1995) now Ingenta
• We are no longer related to the above

Confronted with the Problem

• Libraries are spending an increasing amount on
  electronic resources
• Difficult to search and manage electronic
  resources
• DPL has 1139 print periodical subscriptions
• DPL has access to over 14,000 titles from various
  aggregators print in Gold Rush
• Need a way to integrate local journal holdings
  with online databases

• Digital Object Identifiers CrossRef is a
  publisher based initiative to provide article
  level linking from their websites.
• CrossRef DOI resolver covers publisher based
  articles which may not be your appropriate copy
  and does not include what is available in other
  local loads, aggregators, etc.
• DOI works best in conjunction with a local
  OpenURL resolver

• open access is wonderful
• Free to the end user
• Increased use of these titles
• Promotes scholarly research in developed as well
  as third world countries and smaller poorer
  libraries
• Open access journals are not free to produce
  (someone pays somewhere)

• Lund University Directory of Open Access
  Journal
• We define open access journals as journals that
  use a funding model that does not charge readers
  or their institutions for access. From the BOAI
  definition 1 of "open access" we take the right
  of users to "read, download, copy, distribute,
  print, search, or link to the full texts of these
  articles" as mandatory for a journal to be

• Quality Control The journal must exercise
  peer-review or editorial quality control to be
  included.
• Research Journal Journals that report primary
  results of research or overviews of research
  results to a scholarly community.
• Periodical A serial appearing or intended to

  generally more frequently than annually, each
  issue of which is numbered or dated consecutively
  and normally contains separate articles, stories,
  or other writings.

• Specialized lists from different organizations
  and specialties will include titles missed in the
  Lund directory. For example in Gold Rush

Do you need an ERM?

• Is my library to small?
• How many databases do you get?
• Most libraries in CO have databases through AIRS
  and some others locally subscribed to. If you
  only get the AIRS databases from BCR then you
  probably dont need a local ERM
• Do you have trouble tracking what you have and
  when the subscriptions are coming due
• Can your patrons efficiently find your printed
  and electronic subscriptions?
