Cathedral of Murcia

• Construction started in 1394 and finished in
  1467, although is was added to until 18th c.
• Gothic, renaissance and baroque style.
• Its faÇade is considered the best sample of
  Spanish baroque.

Bell Tower

• It took more than 200 years to build.
• It is 90 metres high (95 with the weather vane
  )
• It has 25 bells from 17th and 18th c.

• Its main faÇade is an eclectic style with

HALL and GALLERY
Inspired by the royal rooms in The Alhambra and
The Alcázar in Seville.
Covered by a glass dome. It connects all the
rooms in the Casino.

Pompeyan Patio
Ball Room

Neobaroque, finished in 1875. The paintings on
the ceiling represent Music, Sculpture, Painting
and Arquitecture. Also these famous people from
Murcia are represented Romea, Salzillo,
Floridablanca y Villacís.
Neoclassical style, surrounded by 14 columns,
decorated in the middle by a beautiful statue
Venus by José Planes.

Womens Dressing Room
Elegant little room in which on the ceiling we
can find paintings showing the allegory of the
night represented by the goddess Selene. The
winged womans eyes follow you around the room.

Salzillo Museum

• Dedicated to the Murcian sculptor Francisco
  Salzillo.
• Founded in 1960 and refurbished in 2002.
• It contains
• The images of the brotherhood of Our Father Jesus
  created in 1600.
• The Riquelme collection, best known as Belén de
  Salzillo (nativity scene) with 556 figures.

Fine Arts Museum

• Built in 1910 above the former Trinidad Convent
  from 16th c.

• Sculpture and regional and national painting
  from the 16th c. until present.

Arqueological Museum

• Built in 1864, known as Culture House.
• Arqueology of Murcia from the Eneolitic until
  The Middle Ages.

City Museum

• Founded in the former Palace of Junteron (16th
  c.), in Los López-Ferrers house.
• There is an orchard at the back of the house of
  hispanomuslim origin, watered by the Caravija
  canal.
• It shows 2,000 years of the history of the city,
  from the first prehistoric settlements until 21st
  c.

Hydraulic Museum
It contains the biggest mill stones in Spain,
with all the machinery and tools used for
grinding grain.
Located in the area of historic-artístic
interest called los Molinos del Río Segura

Romea Theatre

• Inaugurated by Queen Isabel II in 1862
• Its façade is in a neoclassical style, with
  modern details in the entrance. Above there are
  three statues of Beethoven, Mozart and Liszt.

• It has a capacity of 1179 people
• The main room has a classic Greco-Roman style

• Built in 1995
• The Narciso Yepes room has a capacity for 1838
  people

The Royal Monastery of Santa Clara

• Constructed above the remains of the Alcazar from
  the 13c, where the last Murcian muslim kings
  lived.
• Highlights
• Barroque church from the 18th c.
• Sacred art museum with sculptures by Salzillo.
• A Gothic-Mudejar cloister from the 15th c.

Fuensanta Sanctuary

• 6 km from Murcia
• Baroque style from the end of the 17th c.
• It is the usual resting place of the Virgen de la
  Fuensanta, Patron of the city of Murcia.

• The Patron is carried in a procession to the city
  twice a year, during Lent and the September
  celebrations.

Los Jerónimos Monastery

• 4 km from the city
• A baroque style convent from the 18th c.
• Known as the Escorial Murciano, for its grand
  architecture
• The Catholic University San Antonio is situated
  here.

The Virgen of the Dangers

• The chapel of the Virgen is at the end of the old
  bridge Puente Viejo.

• Many Murcians make the sign of the cross over
  when crossing the bridge infront of the chapel to
  ask for protection and help.

Holy Week

• From Our Lady of Sorrows Friday to Resurrection
  Sunday.
• 15 brotherhoods take out their images.
• There are more than one procession every day.
• The penitents hand out sweets, buns and little
  presents.
• Each image shows scenes of Christs Passion.

• The procession takes place on Holy Wednesday
  afternoon
• This is the oldest brotherhood in Murcia.
• Its main image is the Christ of blood.

The Last Supper

• The procession takes place on Good Friday
  morning.
• There is only one image that doesnt belong to
  Salzillo.

The Orchard Parade

• It shows the customs and traditions of our
  huerta or vegetable gardens and orchards.
• The city is a rainbow reflected in the costumes
  of men and women.
• On this day we can enjoy folklore and typical
  food on the streets of Murcia.

THE FLOWERS PARADE

• Celebrated on Easter Wednesday.
• The parade consists of artistic floats decorated
  with real flowers

THE BURIAL OF THE SARDINE

• Celebrated on the Saturday following the Holy
  Week.
• The floats handout little toys and represent the
  Olimpus Gods.
• It is over 150 years old, and means the ending of
  The Spring Festivitties.

• After the parade we can see the show of the
  sardines burial on the old bridge, and fireworks
  displays.

The main bullfighters in Spain come to our
bullfighting ring ...
as well as the main mounted bullfighters

Folklore Festival

• For three days 14 national and international
  folklore groups show their dances on the streets,
  squares and stages of Murcia.

Moors y Christians

• Kábilas and mesnadas, The troops of the
  Christian king and The king of Moors, Alfonso X
  and Aben Hud, enter the city.

The Procesion

• The Virgen of the Fuensanta, fondly called La
  Morenica (the dark virgen) has been the Patron
  Saint of Murciasince the 17th c.

• During 5 or 6 hours the pilgrimers carry the
  Patron up to her sanctuary, 11 kms far from the
  city center . They stop 6 times to cheer her.
