History of Wimbledon
The date for Wimbledon isnt the same year to
year. It generally begins in late June sometime
or early July. Another formula is that it is
held 6 weeks before the first Monday in August.
For 13 days every summer these Lawn
Tennis Championships are held in Wimbledon,
England. They are the oldest and
most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world.

How Did It All Begin?
Back in 1875, the All-England Croquet Club was
nudged into setting aside a bit of their land on
Worple Road in Wimbledon for playing lawn tennis.
People felt that tennis of course, was much more
physically demanding than croquet. Not to
mention, tennis went faster and was more
exciting. The first lawn tennis tournament
included heavy rackets shaped like snowshoes.
The net was 5 feet high at the ends but drooped
to3 feet high in the center. The winner of the
very first Lawn Tennis Championship was Spencer
Gore. At this time it was simply a leisurely
sport for the rich as a pastime hobby. Little
did anyone know just how this competition would
evolve into multi-million dollar industry that it
is today.

Did You Know?

• Women did not play at Wimbledon in the beginning.
  A ladies tournament wasnt set up until 1884.
  The first woman to win was Suzanne Lenglen. Ms.
  Lenglens popularity drew so many crowds that she
  was the reason the managers decided to move the
  competition to a new location. When we watch
  Wimbledon on television this is the new location
• Tickets are considered next to impossible to get.
  Seats called Debenture Seats are provided year
  after year. These are traded on the London Stock
  Exchange for enormous sums of money. Ticket
  scalpers have been know to charge as much as
  1,500 for a single ticket.

Roger Federer dedicated his Wimbledon victory
today to everyone who has helped me.

• The 21-year-old Roger Federer defeated Mark
  Philippoussis from Australia.
• The match took one hour and 56 minutes on Centre
  Court before falling to his knees and bursting
  into tears.
• After winning Roger had this things to say It
  was a dream come true. I just couldnt believe
  it. I didnt really know what to do in the first
  moment. I thought maybe I wont cry but it was
  kind of difficult in such a big match and in such
  an unbelievable stadium where the people are so
  nice.

In the first set I had to stay in there. I knew
she was injured but I just looked at the ball and
nothing else, Serena Williams after retaining
her Wimbledon title.

• Serena Williams retained her Wimbledon title with
  a victory over her sister Venus in two hours and
  three minutes on Centre Court.
• The match had its ups and downs in quality, as
  both players struggled with the problem of facing
  a loved one across the net.
• This was their sixth final meeting in the last
  eight Grand Slams.
• Serena has defeated her older sister five times
  in a row, including at last years Wimbledon
  final.
• After the final the two hugged and Venus took
  pictures of Serena holding the Venus Rosewater
  dish over her head.

2003 Mixed Pair Doubles

• Martina Navatilova proved her championship
  qualities are enduring at the age of 46 she won
  the mixed pair doubles with Indias Leander Paes.
• Martina is now equaled with Billie Jean King as
  the winner of 20 Wimbledon titles.
