First Month of School
  • Designed as an assessment month to find placement
    that is just right for your child.
  • Leveled reading passages-one-on-one
  • Writing assessment-scored with a rubric
  • DIBLES rate, fluency, letter and vowel sounds,
    segmentation, etc.
  • Math Assessment counting groups of objects,
    counting by 2, 5, 10, to 100, writing numbers to
    100 etc.
  • Designed to allow me and the students to focus on
    the procedures and appropriate behavior without
    overwhelming students with difficult curriculum.
  • Guides my instruction.

The School Day
  • The school day officially begins at 835 am.
  • It is very important that students arrive before
    the bell rings at 835.
  • Students are responsible for their homework
    folder and preparing for the day.
  • Students who are tardy miss important information
    and feel rushed to catch up.

Specials Classes
  • Monday Computer/REAL

  • Library check out is every Monday after REAL.
    Please send books back on Friday or Monday.

Lunch
  • Lunch begins at 1050
  • The students go to recess at 1110
  • Students may only eat at our lunch time.

Recess
  • Recess will be everyday even if it feels very
    cold
  • Please send your child dressed appropriately for
    the weather.
  • Layers work well in transitional seasons.

Spelling
  • No Excuse Words
  • Word Family Words
  • High Frequency Words
  • Vocabulary Words
  • Individualized to meet your childs needs.
  • Spelling is checked and graded in their daily
    writing.

Learning Centers
  • 20 minutes Monday-Thursday
  • Not play time, but reinforcement of skills taught
    or an introduction to what will be taught
  • Independent work without a partner
  • Time management is important
  • Work must be finished
  • Appropriate behavior is required out of respect
    for the reading group.

Handwriting
  • We use ball and stick letters.
  • We practice daily
  • Students who need additional practice will
    receive a packet for practice at home.
  • Students with reversals will also receive
    practice pages that focus on the letters and
    numbers that are reversed.
  • Handwriting practice is work!

Reading Incentives
  • Monthly reading goal
  • Sent home on the first of the month and due on
    the last day of the month or as directed by
    teacher
  • Note on front details the incentive
  • Attachment can be found on the website if sheets
    are lost or additional sheets are needed
  • Nightly reading homework helps student meet the
    goal
  • Students who complete the incentive take part in
    a fun activity/party

What does it mean?
  • Some of the markings that you might see on your
    childs paper could include the following
  • Triple linescapitalization
  • One line lower case
  • Circle error or misspelling
  • Nothingdone in class together
  • (80-100 ) ? (65-79) - re-teach

Homework
  • Homework will be assigned for Monday-Thursday for
    the most part.
  • Homework page comes home every Monday with the
    exception of short weeks.
  • Students will have about 20-30 min. of homework
    each evening depending on the student.
  • Please sit with your child while they do their
    work. This is a wonderful opportunity for
    one-on-one help if needed.
  • Check the work for errors.

Late Work
  • Students may turn in homework any time during the
    week and I will stamp their homework page.
  • It is best to do the assignments on the night
    they are sent home as most math homework is used
    in the next days lesson.

  • Having supplies on hand will facilitate homework
    completion.
  • Crayons/markers
  • Pencils
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Erasers
  • Glue/paste
  • Scissors

Teaching Responsibility
  • Pick up their toysno lost crayons, papers, etc.
  • Put their folder in their backpack each
    nightdevelops a system for communication to and
    from school
  • Small chores assigned to themgood team mate and
    task completion
  • Clean roomorganized desk

Cubes
  • Start out each day with 6
  • If only one cube is lost still get a stamp
  • If two cubes- no stamp
  • If three cubes- 5 min. off recess and change of
    location in room
  • If four cubes- All of recess and think sheet is
    filled out.
  • If five cubes-call home
  • All cubes- Dr. Bakke

What your child will hear me say
  • It is ok to make mistakes!
  • Practice makes perfect.
  • Forget the mistake and remember the correction.
  • Give your all.
  • Dont give up!
  • Say you can and then try.
  • Never be bored!
  • You can do it!

Birthdays
  • I will send home a note letting you know the best
    time to celebrate with the class.
  • Small treats please
  • No nut or egg products please
  • Drinks are not necessary
  • Treat bags are discouraged
  • Pre-cut please and easily served
  • Send plates and napkins if needed
  • Half birthdays are celebrated.
  • Invitations should not be passed out at school.
