  • Do not fear, for I have redeemed you I have
called you by name, you are mine.
  • When you pass through the waters, I will be with
you and through the rivers, they shall not
overwhelm you when you walk through fire you
shall not be burned, and the flame shall not
    consume you.
  • For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of

  • Pope John Paul II addresses Young People.
  • Coventry 1982

24
Pope John Paul II
  • Christs gift of the Holy Spirit is going to be
poured out upon you in a particular way. You will
hear the words of the Church spoken over you,
calling upon the Holy Spirit to confirm your
faith, to seal you in his love, to strengthen you
    for his service.

25
  • You will then take your place among fellow
Christians throughout the world, full citizens
now of the People of God. You will witness to the
truth of the Gospel in the name of Jesus Christ.
You will live your lives in such a way as to make
holy all human life. Together with all the
confirmed, you will become living stones in the
cathedral of peace. Indeed you are called by God
to be instruments of his peace.

26
  • My dear young people, the world of today needs
you, for it needs men and women who are filled
with the Holy Spirit. It needs your courage and
hopefulness, your faith and your perseverance.
The world of tomorrow will be built by you.

27
  • My Dear Child,

    future.

worried, wanting to give real meaning to your
    life.
  • Trust Jesus!
  • Be open to his teaching and fix your eyes on his
    face.
  • Allow him to direct your search , your hopes,
  • And all the desires of your heart.

FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND
  • One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach
with the Lord. Many scenes from my life flashed
across the sky. In each scene I noticed
footprints in the sand. Sometimes there were two
sets of footprints, other times there was one
only. This bothered me because I noticed that
during the low periods of my life, when I was
suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat, I could
see only one set of footprints,

31
  • so I said to the Lord, You promised me
Lord, that if I followed you, you would walk with
me always. But I have noticed that during the
most trying periods of my life there has only
been one set of footprints in the sand. Why,
when I needed you most, have you not been there
    for me?

32
  • The Lord replied, The years when you have seen
only one set of footprints, my child, is when I
    carried you.
  • Mary Stevenson

33
My timeline
  • On a sheet of paper mark out a timeline for your
    life so far.
  • What are the key events that have happened in
    your life?
  • Mark on any occasions when God has felt
    particularly close.

34
  • Imagine yourself in 20 years time.
  • Draw a timeline to show the important events.

35
Some Definite Service after John Henry Newman
  • God has created me to do some definite service
  • God has committed some work to me
  • Which is not committed to another.
  • I have my mission. I may never know it in this
life, But I shall be told it in the next.
  • I have a part in this great work
  • I am a link in the chain,
  • A bond of connection between persons.
  • God has not created me for naught.
  • I shall do good, I shall do Gods work
  • I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth
    in my own place,
  • while not intending it, if I do but keep Gods
    commandments
  • and serve the Lord in my calling.
  • Therefore I will trust my Lord.
  • Whatever, wherever I am,
  • can never be thrown away.
  • I ask not to see . I ask not to know . I ask
    simply to be used.

36
Nelson Mandela 1994, Inaugural Speech
  • "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
  • Our deepest fear is that we are powerful, beyond
    measure.
  • It is our light, not our darkness, that most
    frightens us.
  • We ask ourselves "Who am I to be brilliant,
    gorgeous, talented and fabulous"?
  • Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child
of God, your playing small doesn't serve the
    world.
  • There is nothing enlightened about shrinking, so
that other people won't feel insecure around you.
  • We were born to make manifest the glory of God
    that is within us.
  • It is not just some of us, it's in everyone.
  • As we let our own light shine, then we
unconsciously give other people permission to do
    the same.
  • As we are liberated from our own fear, our
    presence automatically liberates others."

37
  • You are salt for the earth.
  • But if salt loses its taste, what can make it
salty again? It is good for nothing, and can only
be thrown out to be trampled under peoples feet.
  • You are light for the world. A city built on a
hill top cannot be hidden. No-one lights a lamp
to put it under a tub they put it on the
lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the
house. In the same way your light must shine in
peoples sight, so that, seeing your good works,
they may give praise to your Father in heaven.

38
  • Father,
  • pour out your Spirit upon our diocese
  • and grant us a new vision of your glory
  • a new experience of your power
  • a new faithfulness to your Word
  • a new consecration to your service
  • so that your love may grow among us
  • and your kingdom come
  • through Christ our Lord,
  • Amen.
