The Problem with College Drinking
By Lauren Helm

Why do College Students Start Drinking Alcohol?
  • Over the years society, has come accustomed to
the idea that once students go off to college it
is time to drink, go to parties, and just have
    fun.
  • They are testing their limits and dealing with
peers on a new level - without supervision and
    relying on only themselves.

4
The Problem
  • The widespread availably of alcohol to students.
  • Aggressive marketing and promoting of alcohol.
  • Excessive unstructured free time for students.
  • Inconsistent publicizing and enforcement of laws
    and policies.
  • Students perceptions that high-risk drinking is
    the norm.

Binge Drinking
  • Binge drinking is defined as having four
(females) or five (males) drinks during a single
evening, and frequent binge drinking means doing
this three of more times during a two week period
    (Wechsler and Nelson, 2001).
