Volunteer Training
  • Technical Services Overview

2
Welcome and Introduction
  • Shhhh! Just kidding. Welcome!
  • NEW library new system change.
  • We need to make changes to every item in the
library to ready them for the new security system
and self-checkout. Thats nearly 97,000 items to
be completed by May. We need your help.

3
Overview
  • We have three basic groups cutters, techies
    and runners.
  • Cutters use scissors to cut pockets out of books.
  • Techies help with problem pockets and make tags.
  • Runners take problem books from the cutters to
    the techies.

4
What is she talking about?
  • Books have pockets, usually on the last page.
Pockets hide old security tags. The old tags
conflict with the new tags, so they need to be
    removed.
  • To remove them we have to cut them out. Cut the
    pocket out NOT the barcode.
  • But some books are more complicated.

5
Problems, problems, problems
  • If the pocket is on an important page we cant
cut it out. (Nobody wants to find the last page
of a mystery has been cut out or the index entry
    you need has disappeared.)
  • Those books take longer to do, so cutters pass
    them on to somebody else.

6
Cutting Pockets step-by-step
  • If the pocket is on a useless page, cut the
    entire page out.
  • If the pocket is on the same page as the barcode,
cut out the pocket but not the barcode.
  • If the pocket is on the flip side of a page that
contains a portion of the book, give the book to
    a runner.
  • If the pocket is on the front or back cover, the
pocket still needs to be removed.
  • If you accidentally cut out the barcode, give the
book and barcode to a runner. (be sure to tell
    them what happened)

7
Technically its sticky stuff
  • There are two groups for the tech crew problem
    solvers and adhesive engineers
  • Problem solvers must CAREFULLY remove pockets on
    important pages.
  • Adhesive engineers assemble tags for the new
    system.

8
Making stickers with brains
  • Assembling the stickers/tags is broken down into
    parts
  • Stickers and chips start out on large rolls and
must be cut into groups of 4.
  • The appropriate branch name needs to be
    underlined with a Sharpie.
  • The chips need to be transferred to the stickers.
  • Not complicated stuff, it just requires precision.

9
Books with brains
  • Both Cutters and Techies will need to put the
    tags in the books
  • This is important stuff and must be done a
    certain way.
  • On the inside of the back cover near the spine
and staggered. This will be explained in detail
    at the library.
  • Dont be intimidated, its easy it just has to
    be done a certain way.

10
Runners
  • Books dont move themselves.
  • Somebody needs to run books from the pocket
cutters to the problem solvers and library
    personnel.
  • Runners also need to be aware of whats going on
and get a chaperone or library employee if
    someone needs help.

11
What task would you do well?
  • Cutters need to be able to cut fairly straight
    lines with scissors.
  • Problem solvers need to be able to remove really
    sticky pockets without tearing pages.
  • Tag makers need to be good with their hands and
able to line up the chips and stickers precisely.
  • Runners will do a lot of moving.

12
Where do you want to work?
  • We need people to go to different areas
  • 68 Cutters in the Childrens room
  • 27 Cutters in the Adult area
  • 10 Cutters in the Young Adult area
  • 4 Runners
  • 15 for the Tech crew
  • These are just estimates to keep in mind.

13
Library etiquette
  • We dont really hush people. You can talk, just
    dont shout across the library.
  • This stuff takes time, dont race!
  • Remember your task
  • Dont run with scissors
  • Dont get stuck on the technical stuff
  • Dont cut-up too much

14
Stick to it!
  • We ask that you wear stickers to identify where
    you will be working.
