• To open up a world of information on the web for
  Spanish speakers by translating web sites,
  e-mails, and web searches
• Focus of the current phase is on the uses of
  translation for K-12 education

• Easier online access to info on public services
• Enriched English as a Second Language resources
• Facilitated search on popular job search web

• Enhanced basic computer-training courses

How You Can Help

• Rate Web site translations and use feedback form
  to share any concerns with email translations
• Share your success stories with Alliance, IBM,
  and local media

Registration

• Email gretchen.godfrey_at_pacer.org to receive a
  project passcode
• www.traduceloahora.org/registration
• Select Alliance Parent Center from
  school/organization dropdown menu
• Enter project passcode received from Gretchen
  Godfrey

Email recipients do not need to be registered

Web Site Translation

• Go to www.traduceloahora.org
• Sign-in using your User Name and Password
• Click on translate in the right menu bar
• Type the URL of the English Web site you wish to
  translate into Spanish
• Rate the site to provide IBM with feedback on how
  software is working

Web Site Translation, cont.

• Web translation software is not able to translate
  Flash or other dynamic content
• The software will still try to re-translate any
  Spanish text into Spanish, so translated page
  will not make sense
• Translated site may lose some formatting so
  layout may not be the same
• Posted Word or PDF documents are not translated

Bi-directional Email Translation

• Must send email from email address entered when
  registering account
• Enter recipients email address in To line
• Enter traduce_at_us.ibm.com in Carbon Copy (CC) line
• Type and send email as usual.
• Recipient will receive original un-translated
  email, and in about 5 minutes will receive
  translated email with a copy of the original
  message.
• Sender will also receive copy of translated email

Bi-directional Email Translation, cont.

• Use short, simple, basic sentences for best
  translations.
• Avoid the use of idioms or colloquialisms.
• Make sure words are spelled correctly and include
  any necessary accents.

Cross-lingual Web Search

• Go to www.traduceloahora.org
• Sign-in using your User Name (email address) and
  Password
• Click on Search in the right menu bar
• Type your Web query in Spanish and receive list
  of relevant English Web pages

Tips

• Before sharing with parents or others, be sure to
  explain the limitations of automatic translation.
  Let users know that email or Web translations are
  not perfect, but meant to be a tool to assist in
  communication.
