- Get out a blank piece of notebook paper and your
list.
2Creating an Opening or a Topic Sentence
- To get started, circle your favorite item from
each list. Using the model on the next slide,
create your opening statement.
3Sentence 1-opening
- Three things that would make me happy are a pair
of Steelers tickets, affordable gas, and a trip
along the Oregon Coast. - If I had three wishes they would include
- Steelers tickets, affordable gas and a trip along
the Oregon Coast would make me happy. - Three sure ways to make me happy would be
4The second sentence begins with an ing word and
uses the first item wished for!
- sitting listening cheering
- driving winning diving
- observing laughing wearing
5Sentence 2
- Sitting in the stands at the football game, I
would be the envy of all my friends. - Watching the Steelers race down the field would
surely get my heart racing. - Cheering on the Steelers at Heinz Field would be
sheer pleasure.
6The third sentence begins with the word To plus
an action word and uses the happening wished for.
- To dance To drive To cheer
- To sing To ride To catch
- To read To watch To glide
7Sentence 3
- To live in a world where gasoline was in
abundance would be easier on my wallet. - To heat my house with affordable gas would allow
me to indulge in special treats. - To spend money on lower priced gasoline would
enable me to take a vacation.
8The fourth sentence begins with a prepositional
phrase and uses the place desired to visit.

- Along the Oregon Coast, I would admire the
seagulls gliding along the water. - For a visit to the Oregon Coast I would need a
new pair of hiking boots. - On the beaches of the Oregon Coast, I would
explore tidepools loaded with interesting sea
life.
10The last sentence is a concluding sentence
beginning with a word such as finally, certainly,
surely, etc.
11Sentence 5-closing
- Certainly my wishes are attainable.
- Surely I deserve all I wish for.
- Hopefully my wishes will come true before Im 50.
12You have successfully compiled a list of
sentences.
- Carefully log on to a lap top.
- Open up a word document
- Create a title for your paragraph
- Type your paragraph using 16font.
- Print
- Make sure your name is on it!
