How Your College Counselor Can Help

How Your High School Coach Can Help
  • Honest appraisal of your ability
  • Seek out the athletic program at specific schools
    that will be right for you (more to this than
    just ability)
  • Help prepare video to send to colleges
  • Contact college coaches
  • Work with college counselors

Contacting College Coaches
  • Dont sit back and wait for coaches to contact
    you.
  • Write a letter (or e-mail) a coach at a school
    you may be interested in early in your junior
    year.
  • NCAA Coaching Directories are available in the
    KCCC

What to say
  • Honesty is always the best policy!
  • Your interest in the school and in playing for
    her/his team
  • Your position and year in high school
  • Include as much of the following as you have
    available
  • Athletic resume
  • Highlight DVD
  • Team Schedules for SSA team and outside club teams

  • Biographical Info (name, address, phone, DOB,
    etc)
  • Academic information (school, year, GPA estimate,
    SAT scores)
  • Athletic info (height, weight, batting average,
    40 time, max bench, etc.)
  • Athletic awards
  • Sample

Highlight Videos
  • Dont edit out all your mistakes!
  • Include footage where youre not the star (some
    of it should be a whole half or period of a game)

Recruiting Services
  • Private recruiters
  • Videographers
  • You dont need them!
  • Donate that money to the SSA Annual Fund!

Useful things for Parents and Student-Athletes to
do
  • Talk with each other
  • What do you hope to do? Goals in the process?
  • What type of school could be right for you
  • Visit (unofficially) lots (as many as reasonable)
    of schools
  • Keep students in the drivers seat in the process
  • Let the student do the talking, but dont forget
    to get your questions answered, too!

Common Pitfalls to Avoid
  • Students and parents sometimes have an
    unrealistic idea of athletic ability
  • Determining if college coach is sincere
  • Getting students to see beyond their role as an
    athlete
  • Keeping egos in check
  • Getting students to acknowledge the importance of
    academic achievement
  • Senioritis
  • Confidentiality Transcripts and test scores
  • Considering careers other than professional
    athlete
