some ACA announcements, some new Sailors to
recognize and some warm fuzzy thingies to give
out. So strap on your life jacket, grab your
paddle, your peg-leg and your best parrot, its

4Advisors Prepare for Professional Development Day
- Thursday, Nov. 29th, the Texas Union will be the
sight of great learning and camaraderie as the
ACA Advisors join together in the annual ritual
of Professional Development Day!!! - When asked about this annual event Shelly Gherke,
a member of the PDD Committee said As every
year, this PDD will be outstanding! We have over
15 breakout sessions and two Outstanding Keynote
speakers! She was quite flushed with excitement
at the thought of all the advisors breaking out
and being developed. She did say that they need
volunteers to help make the event everything that
it can be. If you are interested in being a
volunteer email Anna Tapsack(tapsak_at_psy.utexas.edu
). -
5PDD Cont.
- To register for the conference, and assure
yourself of getting developed, as well as a
spiffy new nametag to put on your wall with the
other ones, go to - Mommy I Want to Attend PDD!!! and I want a
pony! - The PDD crew would also like to ask for LCD
Projectors that might be available for borrowing
from members or their departments? If we can get
some donated projectors we can save some on
Union costs. If anyone has an LCD projector that
can be donated for the day email Shelly Gehrke
(shelly.gehrke_at_mail.utexas.edu) ASAP. Thats all
the news thats reportable from the PDD Crew. We
look forward to seeing you all at PDD and
enjoying the fun, friends, and developing! - The Professional Development Day Committee
wanted to extend one last reminder regarding the
registration deadline this Friday, Nov. 16, 2007.

7R.O.A.D. to Success
- The R.O.A.D. committee is currently co-chaired by
Elizabeth Hastings and Brett Westbrook. Goals
for this year include continuing with a brown bag
series of professional development opportunities,
covering a wide range of topics. R.O.A.D. will
repeat some brown bags from last year, such as
the Theory of Advising. We will also debut some
new topics, such as the NACADA Clearing House and
presentations for brand new advisors. Webinars
from NACADA are also on the calendar for the
coming year. - R.O.A.D. plans to pilot a different approach to
the webinars next semester. Instead of
broadcasting the webinar at one specific time and
one specific location, we will distribute copies
of the webinar on CD, which can be viewed at any
time. R.O.A.D. will then sponsor a discussion of
the content with appropriate UT personnel
present. - This approach allows staff who cannot attend the
2-hour webinars access to the material and also
allows for a more in-depth discussion of the
material. Look for announcements about how to
participate. -
- Longer-range goals for R.O.A.D. include on-line
registration for professional development events.
Were also working on an electronic portfolio as
an important tool for professional development.
R.O.A.D. is sponsoring a round table discussion
at the upcoming Professional Development Day on
the e-portfolio. We hope to see a lot of you
there as we gather ideas. -
8R.O.A.D cont.
- R.O.A.D. is very interested in increasing access
to professional development opportunities. We
hold sessions at the noon hour for that reason.
However, we realize that not everyone can get
away from the office for longer periods or at
different times of the day. We are dedicated to
finding ways to make sure that advisors are able
to receive the training they need as
professionals and we welcome your ideas and input
about how to accomplish this important goal. -
- The R.O.A.D. Committee would like to thank
everyone who has participated in an event. Your
efforts to grow as a professional are a testament
to your dedication. We also appreciate very much
hearing from our colleagues. We welcome ideas
for professional development, ways to make the
training more accessible for everyone, and
anything else you would like to contribute. -
- And finally, let us know if youd like to be on
the committee. Wed love to hear from you! -
- Sincerely,
- Liz Hastings

due largely to the good efforts of those talented

12Argosy final thoughts
- Happiness resides not in posessions and not in
gold the feeling of happiness dwells in the
soul.Democritus - Until we sail together again, have a great time,
may the wind fill your sails, your crewmates be
merry and your heart be full.
