  • From the east coast to the west we are going on
    a tour of these selected academic institutions
    which provide Systems Engineering Programs.
  • The United States Military Academy
  • West Point, New York
  • Southern Methodist University

University System Engineering
  • After viewing the introductory information to the
    Universities, we will proceed to the information
    regarding their Systems Engineering Programs.
  • You will want to make notes of the differences in
    the programs.
  • At the end of the session, you will be asked to
    identify the types of careers for which the
    various programs will prepare you.
  • The following table will help you to evaluate
    which university would be your preferred
    selection.

Comparison of Universities
Print this table. During the tour, enter a
number from 0 to 10 in each block where 10 is
the highest or best rating and zero is the lowest
or worst rating.

Tradeoff Analysis
  • After you complete the table, sum the entries
    each row to arrive at a total score for each
    university
  • You will have just performed a systems
    engineering tradeoff analysis.

General Information
  • The following slides take you through a guided
    tour of the four selected universities starting
    in the east and going west across the United
    States.
  • The words in blue are topics and headings.
  • The words in red are the selections to be made
    and clicked on with the mouse once you are on the
    indicated website.

  • Go to the website http//www.se.usma.edu.
  • Skim down the page to the video clips area and
    select Systems Engineering to view a video and
    hear an audio of a students viewpoint.
  • Go back to the website in step 1.
  • You may try to view the USMA Virtual Tour located
    at the bottom of the black column on the left.
    My connection was too slow to be practical.
  • Next select Academic Programs in the black column
    on the left, it will take you to
    http//www.se.usma.edu/Programs/Programs.htm.
    Read the text.
  • Next select the Systems Engineering Program
    Description just below the text, it will take you
    to http//www.se.usma.edu/Programs/SE.htm. This
    website provides an excellent description of
    Systems Engineering and the opportunities that it
    could provide.

  • Go to the website http//www.smu.edu.
  • On the left hand side under Quick Links select
    Visit SMU this will take you to the website
    http//www.smu.edu/admission.visit.asp.
  • It the upper right hand corner is the Virtual SMU
    logo, select this.
  • There are many 360o clickable views to choose
    from for your virtual visit including the campus
    view, key landmarks, life on campus, learning,
    Meadows Museum, and sports venues. Select one
    that appeals to you.
  • Then go back to the main website in number 1 and
    select Engineering under Academics in the second
    column this will take you to http//www.engr.smu.e
    du.
  • Under the tab Departments is a pull down menu,
    select Engineering Management, Information
    Systems, taking you to http//engr.smu.edu/emis/in
    dex.html.

  • An interesting program at SMU is the 41 program.
    Select the 41 program under Programs and
    Courses in the section Whats New in EMIS?
  • Read about the 41 program and then select the
    link EMIS masters degree in the text, taking you
    to http//www.engr.smu.edu/emis/Programs/programs.
    html.
  • Next, select the Master of Science, in Systems
    Engineering (MSSE). This will take you to
    http//engr.smu.edu/emis/Programs/MS_SE/ms_se.html
    .
  • Here is an excellent description of Systems
    Engineering and the SMU Systems Engineering
    Program.

  • Start at the website http//www.mines.edu.
  • Using the popup menu under Visitors, select the
    Virtual Visit, taking you to http//www.mines.edu/
    tour/.
  • In the upper right corner of the Virtual Visit to
    Mines illustration is a hot air balloon, select
    this to go to Webcams, Panoramas, and Maps.
  • If you select the Panoramas of the Campus and
    Area, you will find a list of several 360
    clickable views. If instead, you select the
    Campus Web Camera, there is a view that is
    updated every 10 seconds.
  • Use your back button to go back to the Virtual
    Visit to Mines illustration. There is a small
    red brick building on the right side, when you
    hold your mouse over it, it indicates Academic
    Programs, select this (taking you to
    http//www.mines.edu/Academic/).

  • On the Academics page, select Academic
    Departments. In the first drop down menu under
    Departments, select Engineering and then click on
    Go. This will take you to http//egweb.mines.edu.
  • This is the Division of Engineering page which is
    interesting to read. Next select Programs from
    the tabs across the top. On the page that
    appears, select 5 Year Program. This will take
    you to http//egweb.mines.edu/5year.html.
  • A description of the universities Physics
    Bachelors Degree combined with Masters Degree
    in Systems Engineering is given.

  • Start the tour by going to http//www.sjsu.edu.
  • Under Quick Links select Virtual Tour, taking you
    to http//www.sjsu.edu/vtour.
  • There are three selection to choose from photo
    gallery, 360o Quicktime VR, or streaming real
    media. Dont spend too much time here there is
    much more to come. Choose from these for your
    pleasure and then return to the start, page 1
    above.
  • Select Academic Programs in the upper left
    section which will take you to http//www.sjsu.edu
    /academic_programs .
  • Select Colleges, Departments, Programs. On the
    page that follows select Engineering which will
    take you to http//www.engr.sjsu.edu/coe.
  • Under Programs on the left side, select
    Industrial and Systems (ISE).

  • From the Industrial Systems Engineering page
    select the Play ISE Videos. Here are great
    videos of ISE Careers, Packaging (Engr) Careers,
    and Packaging at SJSU available in your preferred
    choice of Real, Windows Media, or Quicktime.
  • Back at the Industrial Systems Engineering page
    now select What is Systems Engineering? This
    takes you to an excellent description of Systems
    Engineering on the National Society of
    Professional Engineers webpage,

Conclusion
  • Finish your tradeoff analysis by summing the rows
    to determine which of the universities has the
    most potential of the four.
  • Write a summary of career opportunities and
    anything that you found interesting regarding
    systems engineering.
  • You may submit your results to either your
