8What is the PEER COUNSELING PROGRAM?
The Peer Counseling Program is a team of Rutgers
University work-study students who provide
information to students and parents by telephone
and through personal interaction at the Office of
Financial Aid reception desk. The team of Peer
Counselors represents the voice and face of
the office and plays an essential part of the
service provided to the Rutgers community.
9Basic Job Description
To be a part of the Peer Counseling Program, you
must possess traits that work well with the
public such as neat appearance, pleasant
demeanor, intelligible and audible voice, and
patience.

Each peer counselor will be trained in the
customer services aspect of financial aid which
includes, but is not limited to, telephone
techniques, etiquette, and interpersonal skills
for dealing with clients on an individual basis.
Beyond customer service, the peer counselor
will learn all aspects of the Financial Aid
Management System (FAMS) to capably assist
clients. She/he will become familiar with
all financial aid programs and attend training
sessions to ensure accurate dissemination of
information to the financial aid public.
11DUTIES
- Answer telephone at the telephone bank
- and/or workstations within the office
- Assist with reception counter duties
- Perform special FAMS projects such
- as tracking and linking
- Assist Coordinators with statistical reports
- Assist financial aid staff with special projects
- Perform other duties as assigned
12To become a peer counselor
- File a Free Application For Federal Student Aid
(FAFSA) and receive an offer of Federal Work
Study on the award letter. - Complete a Job Application
- Return the Job Application to The Student
Employment Office. - 4. Complete a Peer Counseling Program
Application, which can be obtained in the Office
of Financial Aid, Student Employment, or on this
web site. - 5. Submit a resume at the time of interview for
the position. Qualified applicants will be
contacted by a representative from the Office of
Financial Aid for a scheduled interview.
