Title: True Blue Titanium Game

1
True Blue Titanium Game
Department of Chemical Engineering University of
Connecticut Presented by Professor Suzanne S.
Fenton
2
Goals and Objectives
  • To raise awareness of the chemical engineering
    profession
  • Provide hands-on investigation
  • of chemical engineering phenomena
  • Introduce experimental practices and methods
  • Practice teamwork/group problem solving

3
How to Play
  • Assemble groups of 3-4 students into companies
  • Each company is competing for a 10,000,000
  • contract to produce titanium strips
  • The criterion for competition
  • Your product must exactly match the model
  • Your product must be consistently reproducible
  • You must be able to accurately predict process
condition necessary to produce any specified color

4
How to Play
  • Companies have 50 minutes to
  • Assemble the process
  • Plan a strategy, run experiments take data
  • Produce titanium strips
  • At the end of 50 minutes, each company will
  • Show their product
  • Demonstrate product reproducibility
  • Present their approach for developing a
predictive model by which any color could be
    produced
  • The winning company will receive the 10,000,000
    contract (or similar prize)

5
Background Information
  • Electrochemical Reactions
  • Cathode reaction
  • 4H2O 4e- ? 2H2 4OH-
  • Anode reaction
  • 4OH- ? 4e- 2H2O O2

Amt H2 O2 Produced ? I t I current t time
elapsed
6
Background Information
  • Chemical Reaction
  • O2 formed via electrochemical reaction then
    reacts with the titanium metal
  • Ti4 O2 ? TiO2
  • TiO2 (titanium oxide) a transparent oxide film
    forms on the titanium metal

7
Background Information
  • Film formation mass transfer limitations
  • As time ? TiO2 layer (an insulator)
    thickens
  • layer may become so thick, electrons have
difficulty passing through it (no current flows
    and all reactions stop)
  • the process is MASS TRANSFER LIMITED
  • Oxide film thickness ? Voltage time

8
Background Information
  • Thin film interference
  • Some light is reflected by surface of film and
some passes through and is reflected off the
    metal below
  • Colors are produced by the constructive
interference of reflected light a function of
    the film thickness

9
Background Information
  • In Summary
  • Different voltages and anodizing times affect the
thickness of oxide film on the titanium
  • Different thicknesses
  • produce different colors

10
Hints
  • You might find it helpful to measure the current
    during your experiments
  • You might also find it helpful
  • To measure the time

Safety Considerations
3- 9v batteries in series will produce 27
volts This is enough to give a significant
shock DO NOT touch bare wires Batteries that
are directly shorted may rupture, releasing
battery chemicals BE SURE to connect batteries
as directed
