2
Project Goals
  • Design manufacture sealed gearboxes
  • Minimal weight
  • Low noise
  • High durability
  • Minimal volume
  • High speed maneuverability
  • Design preliminary turret system
  • Support HK G36c Assault Rifle
  • House vision system and necessary hardware

3
Component Selection
  • Gears (3.331 red.)
  • Helical
  • High strength
  • Low noise
  • Comparable weight to spur gears
  • Shafts
  • Titanium
  • Light weight
  • Excellent strength
  • Bearings
  • Deep groove ball bearings
  • Light weight
  • Support thrust loads
  • Gearbox
  • .75 Aluminum
  • .050/.010 Titanium
  • Light weight
  • Sufficient Strength

Preliminary Turret Design
  • Turret ring incorporated into top deck of hull
  • Vertical loads supported by bearing at base
  • Radial loads supported by roller bearings
  • Electronics capability through slip rings
  • 360o turret rotation
  • 45o weapon pitch adjustment

13
Preliminary Turret Design
14
Summary
  • Aluminum and Titanium construction for low weight
  • Helical Gears for quiet operation
  • Final gear ratio of 3.331 gives high top speed
    and adequate torque
  • Gearbox manufacturing is complete
  • Preliminary turret design to be delivered,
    possible mock-up turret, by 4/28/05

15
Recommendations
  • Lightening holes in gears could significantly
    reduce overall weight of gearbox.
  • Neoprene motor mounts were tested, but a stiffer
    material would yield better results.
  • Oil sealing is a challenge try a gasket sealing
system and/or O-rings on the outer races of
    bearings.
