What is Bluetooth?
Bluetooth is a standard for wireless connectivity
Based on a low cost short range radio link.
Intended to replace applications with short
cables or IR ports
3
Some possible uses for Bluetooth
4
Ear pieces for mobile phones
5
Automatic sync between devices
PDA could automatically sync to home or office
desktop to exchange information when ever they
are close enough
6
Public phone/internet access
In waiting areas, such as at airports, Bluetooth
internet portals could allow you to surf the web,
or make voice-over-IP phone calls
7
Prepare your home for your arrival
When you get home, your PDA could unlock the door
for you, turn on lights you like, tune in your TV
to shows you are interested in and other related
task.
8
Hotel Check in
Your PDA could automatically check you into your
hotel, download the keys to your room, and unlock
your door as your approach.
9
Big Backers
Some of the original backers of Bluetooth are
3Com, Ericsson, Intel, IBM, Lucent, Microsoft,
Motorola, Nokia, and Toshiba.
The Special Interest Group has nearly 2000
adopter companies worldwide (including ATMEL).
10
Range Data Rate
  • Typical range is up to 10m
  • Range will automatically be reduced as needed to
conserve power and for better security
  • With newer technology, and amplifies range can
    be boosted past 100m.

Data rate of up to 1Mbps
11
Frequency
  • Operates in the unlicensed ISM band around 2.4GHz
    and uses spread spectrum communication
    (microwave).
  • For some countries with a smaller ISM band a down
    scaled version is also provided
  • Can withstand high error rate due to expected
noise at this frequency (such as microwave ovens)

12
Steps to Establish communications
  • Inquiry Device automatically looks around for
    other devices within range
  • Response In range devices will respond with
    there address
  • Paging 1st device sends out a page used to sync
    clock offsets
  • Link establishment 1st device address other
    device
  • Service discovery
  • communication channels are established
  • Security verified
  • PPP
  • Network Protocols (TCP/IP, IPX, AppleTalk )

13
Security
  • Bluetooth implements a security system that
    includes
  • Data encryption using both hardware IDs and
    software PINs
  • Fast frequency hopping (about 1,600 hops/sec)
  • Output power automatically limited to fit the
    distance needed between devices.
  • Other crazy math beyond our understanding

Bottom line Bluetooth is secure enough for most
home and business needs
