Environmental Policy Analysis
  • WHY STUDY ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY IN SACRAMENTO?
  • California has been an energy and environmental
policy leader for thirty-five years and is
recognized across the nation and around the world
for its innovative approaches to problem solving.
  • California still tackles problems of resource
    management and environmental sustainability in
ways that other states, localities, and foreign
countries want to understand and emulate.
  • The UCCS Environmental Policy Analysis Program
    gives UC students the chance
  • to learn about this remarkable record
  • to work side-by-side with those who make policy
  • to prepare themselves to become the leaders of
    tomorrow

5

6
Environmental Policy Analysis The Nuts and Bolts
  • Most students in the summer environment program
want and need a refresher course in the nuts and
    bolts of Californias environmental policy
    processes and governance institutions.
  • To provide this, we will make an intensive review
and revision of Judy Orttungs Protecting the
    California Environment A Citizens Guide
(1980) and student authors will publish their
revisions of selected chapters on the web.
  • This review and revision work will familiarize
students with the main legislative committees
dealing with environmental and energy policy in
California, as well as the principal executive
branch agencies, interest groups, and local
    actors.
  • The author has agreed to our undertaking this
work as a UCCS project and will likely join us
    for a course session.

7
Environmental Policy Analysis Internships
  • Available in a variety of legislative, executive,
legal, and civil society settings where difficult
environmental and energy policy issues facing
California and the nation are addressed.
  • Past students have interned for
  • Principal legislative committees dealing with
    environmental issues
  • Legislators and staffers who make environmental
    policy a specialty
  • Boards, commissions, and departments of the
    California Resources Agency and CalEPA
  • Non-profits and interest groups with a focus on
    the environment
  • The UC Center Internship Director will work with
each Scholar Intern one-on-one to secure an
    appropriate internship placement.
