10- Standardization of framework themes is critical
to the achievement of interoperability among
diverse geospatial data suppliers and users. - The national acceptance and utilization of
American National Standards (ANS) for framework
data themes is the first step toward
interoperability. - Expansion of the current framework layers to
encompass more themes of national, regional,
local or topical importance is an FGDC priority.

RealFive Action Teams
- Framework Standards Development
- Standards for Additional Themes of National
Importance - Publishing Metadata
- Implementing Standards Web Protocols
- Urban Areas
12Framework Data Standards
13Framework Data Standards
- Develop standards through procedures established
by the American National Standards Institute
(ANSI) and InterNational Committee for
Information Technology Standards (INCITS). - Bring together subject matter experts from all
levels of government (Federal, State, and local),
academia, and the private sector to develop data
standards for Framework themes - Use ISO 19100 series of geographic information
standards developed by ISO Technical Committee
211, ANSI standards, and FGDC standards to
develop Framework data standards - Apply ISO General Feature Model to define feature
types - Provide UML modeling support
- Provide documentation of feature types in data
dictionary - Map UML data models to XML/Geography Markup
Language schema documents
14Framework Data Standards
- Initially developed through Geospatial One-Stop,
but FGDC has assumed leadership for continued
standards activities. - Registered as INCITS Project 1574-D
- Public review period closed November 15, 2004
- Comments being evaluated by editing committees
- Approval by American National Standards Institute
(ANSI) planned for CY 2005 - Implementation schemas to create, validate, and
process geographic information will be publicly
available.
15NSDI Future Directions - Making Framework Real
Framework Data Standards
- Notice of public review reached 40,000 to 100,000
geospatial professionals through various
publications and professional networks, including
FGDC, Geospatial One-Stop, and INCITS L1
membership and distribution lists. -
- As of November 17
- Number of registrants 347
- Number of registrants who downloaded documents
243 (nearly 70) - Number of registrants who submitted comments 30
- Number of comments 4951

17Standards for additional data themes of National
Importance
- URISA will submit a proposal to develop an
Address Data Standard. This standards
development effort will pick up on the work done
by Census on an Address Data Standard. - NOAA is developing a Shoreline Data Content
Standard through the FGDC standards development
process.
