The Definition of Discipline
  • To disciple
  • To teach
  • To mold

How does discipline differ from punishment?
4
Discipline That Teaches
  • The word discipline has the same root meaning as
disciple which means learner or follower.
  • Discipline does not punish it teaches acceptable
    behavior.

5
Discipline That Teaches
  • Discipline that teaches uses positive
re-enforcement to promote and encourage proper
    and acceptable behavior.
  • Discipline is the process of teaching them how to
    behave properly.

So what works?
6
Discipline That Teaches
  • Set the standards.
  • Children cannot meet your expectations for
behavior if they do not know what they are.
  • You will need to determine a set of club rules
and present copies to all your clubbers and their
    parents.
  • Send copies home to the parents. (see example.)

Sample Club Rules

Discipline That Teaches
  • Determine the rewards for proper behavior.
  • You have to give the kids a reason for following
    the rules.
  • A bribe is something paid for illicit behavior.
  • A reward is something given for proper behavior.
  • The rewards they can expect should be both
    tangible and esteem building.
  • Points given for their team should be for
    behaving properly and desirable actions.

9
Discipline That Teaches
  • Other positive re-enforcement ideas
  • Awana shares -
  • Individual rewards for Handbook sections recited
    -
  • Other Awards - Uniform Inspection, Clubber of the
    month, bring-a-friend treats, etc.
  • Praise - Always praise good behavior,
achievements, good manners, etc. Be deliberate
and look for things to praise your clubbers
about. (see handout 10 Ways to Praise)

10
Discipline That Teaches
  • Determine the consequences for improper behavior
    -
  • Use the 3 count!
  • Removal from just one part of club night.
  • No uniform - no awards.

11
Discipline That Teaches
  • Start off right -
  • Try to give out as many "counts" as possible the
    first four weeks of club.
  • You can always lighten up but you can never
    tighten up.
  • Set the standard and level of expectation right
    from the beginning.

12
Discipline That Teaches
  • Be consistent -
  • Don't be harder on one child because he or she is
more difficult. Don't be lenient with a child be
    cause they are high achievers.
  • Show them that you really do love them by doing
what you said you were going to do.

13
Discipline That Teaches
  • Special needs children - Talk to their parents.
    Make special provisions if possible.
  • What if none of this works? - Find out why.
  • Were you inconsistent? Did they not understand?
Did you set your expectations too low or too
high? Maybe it would be best if this child stays
    home?
  • Let them make that choice.

14
Positive Discipline
  • Emphasize punishment for misbehavior?
  • Encourage good behavior through rewards?
  • Verbal praise
  • Positive points
  • Special recognition
