club per class - Then have Literature / Idea Circles

- Provide time for
- Journal reflections about their reading

with a partner or in a small group

20Choral Reading
- A non-threatening way to read
- Others will stumble, but not you (and if you do,
no one will notice) - Read Pronunciation Poem
21Pronunciation Poem Part 1
- I take it you already know Of tough and bough
and cough and dough? - Others may stumble but not you On hiccough,
thorough, laugh and through. - Well done! And now you wish perhaps, To learn of
less familiar traps? -
22Pronunciation Poem Part 2
- Beware of heard, a dreadful word That looks like
beard and sounds like bird. - And dead, it's said like bed, not bead-for
goodness' sake don't call it 'deed'! - Watch out for meat and great and threat (they
rhyme with suite and straight and debt).
23Pronunciation Poem Part 3
- A moth is not a moth in mother, Nor both in
bother, broth, or brother, And here is not a
match for there, - And then there's doze and rose and lose-Just
look them up- and goose and choose, And cork and
work and card and ward And font and front and
word and sword, And do and go and thwart and
cart
24Pronunciation Poem LAST PART
- Come, I've hardly made a start! A dreadful
language? Man alive! - I'd learned to speak it when I was
- ?
25Language Experience Approach (LEA)
- Have them write a story (or dictate a story to
you) and practice reading it for fluency - Insert vocabulary you would like for them to work
on - Or, provide a list of vocabulary words that they
must insert into their story
26Photo Essays
- Students bring in pictures (or you take pictures
of them) and write a story about what takes place
in the pictures - See my Mothers Day Book example(Show them a
model, since it is always easier to do things
with a model.)

44Class Books
- Make the LEAs or photo essays into class books
- Students will gravitate toward those most
- Also, show different authors styles for them to
mimic - They write, read their writing, read others
writings, making a lovely reading and writing
connection. ?
45Include Technology!
- Adolescent research I am working on (with a team
at Towson University) shows - They enjoy spending hours on the computer reading
and writing for leisure - They do not spend much time in school on the
computer - They have little to no trouble comprehending what
they read on the computer because they are
motivated to read about their own self-selected
topics
46Remember
- The more you read, the better you get.
- (no matter what you are reading)
47Speed Demos Not Dates(my article on this is
located on my website)
- Another exciting way to share information about
readings/research - Provides oral presentation skills in a
non-threatening manner - Teaches how to gift wrap words to make them
sound pretty - We will do one now!
- Share one way you have motivated students to read
and write.
