Title: Save The Shellfish
1Peyton Silver Section 61
Save The Shellfish!
2Problem 1
What Has Happened In The Past?
These are buckets of crabs that have already been
caught from the Chesapeake Bay. The buckets are
so full you can tell people over crab.
- People over crabbing.
- People polluting the bay from cars, oils trash,
etc. - No crab laws for the amount of crabs you could
catch from the bay. - No one did anything about making a law
3Too many crabs are going from the bay to being
cooked and eaten.
- Blue crab s declining
- Constant harvest pressure on species and the loss
of S.A.V. - Over crabbing
- SAV gets pulled for stuff, but crabs need it so
the more pulled, the less homes for crabs - Bass and people eat crabs
- Crabs reduced catches by commercial and
recreational crabbers - Algae dies, decomposition process uses oxygen in
the water to a point where it cant reach aquatic
life to survive
Problem 2
What Is Happening Now ?
4Data
This is a blue crab.
- Data shows how many pounds (in millions) of
crabs from the Chesapeake Bay are harvested each
year by Maryland, Potomac, and Virginia - It shows that the number decreases because the
more over crabbing the less crabs to catch
5Conclusions
- Blue crabs need help
- Over the past 30 years there has been a 26
decrease in the of crabs - Too many crabs and the things that crabs need
are being taken out of the bay - Harvest and pollution is killing lots of crabs
Blue Crab Abdomens
Catch less crabs!!
6Solutions / Recommendations
- We need to focus on the areas of
- Fishery management planning
- Reduced harvest pressure
- Bay grass restoration
- Reducing nutrient pollution to improve the
levels of dissolved oxygen in the summer
More crabs need homes like these and we can help.
7Personal Action Plan
- When I order crabs I will only order the number
of crabs I can eat - Join a program to help crabs survive
- Adopt a crab and make sure that crab is healthy
and happy - Go on strike against the number of crabs being
eaten
This is WAY too many crabs.
This looks MUCH better.
