Baby Scale Monitor
  • By Tom Bradshaw
  • School Riverview High School
  • 3/8/2010

2
Criterion G Problem
  • A social problem that is very much a factor in
every parents life is the safety and protection
    of their new born children.

3
Criterion G
  • Present Solutions
  • Monitor that listens for sound only could
    potentially miss stealthy kidnappers.
  • Showing a small video image doesnt have any
alarm in place to alert parents there's potential
    danger.

4
Criterion G
  • The goal of my project is to design an IT project
that can solve my end users problem.

5
Criterion H
  • Two possible IT approaches
  • Primary Scale with an alarm system.
  • Secondary Motion Sensor

6
Criterion H
  • Advantages of Primary solution
  • Reliable, cannot fake actual weight
  • Lets parents keep a watchful eye 24/7

7
Criterion H
  • Disadvantages of primary solution
  • Potentially high prices for hardware/software
  • Batteries could fail
  • Disturb baby with false alarm

8
Criterion H
  • Advantages of secondary solution
  • Alarm set off with any movement
  • Doesnt disturb child

9
Criterion H
  • Disadvantages of secondary solution
  • Expensive
  • Programming is difficult for the
    hardware/software utilized.

10
Criterion H
  • Primary solution most appeals to end-user
  • Which is the solution with the scale, the alarm,
    and the webcam.

11
Criterion I
  • Finished Product
  • Triple beam balance with alarm system
  • Webcam to pick up noise
  • Skype, software, so end-user can check on their
    baby.

12
Criterion I
13
Criterion I
  • The Gantt chart outlines the important schedule I
followed to complete my complex ITGS product.
  • Includes the dates that are critical to the
completion of my product by March 1st, 2010.

14
Criterion I
  • Hardware
  • Continental Scale Work, Triple beam balance
  • Philips Webcam SPC 1300NC
  • Momentary Switch, Model 275-618Mini 12VDC
  • Electric Buzzer, Model 273-055
  • Enclosed 4 AA Battery Holder, Model 270-409

15
Criterion I
  • Software
  • Skype 4.1 for window
  • Philips SPC 1300NC Webcam Installation CD v2.00

16
Criterion I
  • My hardware and software were helpful because
they worked well together to complete the entire
project, and without one piece the product
    wouldnt have worked at all.
  • I used Skype 4.2 for Windows - Download the
latest version of Skype and get free computer
calls for my communication software program.

17
Criterion I
  • Types of Data collected
  • Surveys Pre and Post surveys from the end-user
  • Video Of product working

18
Criterion J
  • Made pre and post questionnaires so that the
    feedback and necessary adjustments/improvements
    to product are made correctly.
  • And to the end-users advice given in the comment
    section.

19
Criterion J
  • Went through 3 testing Phases
  • Alpha Tester Matt Erickson
  • Beta Testers Angus, Judy, and Matt
  • End user tester Matt Erickson

20
Criterion J
  • After each test, there were insightful criticisms
made. I took them, and fixed my product to their
    specifications, for the next test.
  • Such as changing the location of the momentary
switch, and type of scale used.
  • ?

21
Criterion J
  • In the following testing video, the dumbbell is
acting as the baby on the scale.
  • This is the visual data collected of my final
    product.

22
Criterion J Testing Video
23
Criterion K
  • Variables that limited the potential of my
    product
  • 1. Money
  • 2. Time
  • With either of these in a greater amount my
product couldve been a lot more advanced.

24
Criterion K
  • Recognizing the social issue and the problem
    being solved
  • Matt commented in the feedback that, I hear this
buzzer and Im able to see what is going on via
    the webcam.

25
Criterion K
  • In the future I believe my project will impact
health, because it will allow for some of the
parents stress to be put to rest, because there
is now a reliable piece of technology guarding
    their baby.

26
Criterion K
  • Overall I met my goal of creating a product that
can help in the safety and protection of parents
    new born children.
