Anesthesiology is the use of medicine to prevent the feeling of pain or another sensation during surgery or other procedures that might be painful.
Anesthesiologist specializes in giving and managing anesthetics and specially trained nurse anesthetist provides assistance in the same
Types of Anesthesia general, local and regional (spinal, epidural / caudal, nerve blocks)
3 Before Surgery
Examination of the type of anesthesia
Determine the best combination of drugs and dosages
Inspection of your mouth opening and visualization of the soft tissues of the pharynx
Condition of teeth and location of dental crowns and caps are checked
Neck flexibility and head extension observed.
If an endotracheal tube is indicated and airway management is deemed difficult, then alternative placement methods such as fiber optic intubation may be used
Eating and drinking restrictions for 12-24 hours before surgery
IV is placed into arm before surgery for the injection of anesthesia
Vital Body Sign Sensors to monitor vital body signs
4 During Surgery
CRNA is always under the supervision of the anesthesiologist
Oxygen mask is provided if you are having local or regional anesthesia, or sedation
If you need an endotracheal tube, your anesthesiologist will take every precaution to avoid any complications during the placement and removal of it
As an alternative, your anesthesiologist may use a Laryngeal Mask Airway (LMA) instead of an endotracheal tube as it is an effective method of assisting your breathing with a decreased likelihood of a sore throat
Anesthesia machines are used by anesthesia providers to deliver the safest of anesthetics to you during your surgery. The machine has vital controls for the flow of oxygen, air, nitrous oxide, and anesthetics.
5 After Surgery
CRNA will take you to the post anesthesia care unit (PACU) and will stay with you until a recovery room nurse can safely care for you
Inform your recovery room nurse if you experience nausea and vomiting after surgery
If you experience some discomfort and pain, you would receive drugs for the relief
You will be sleepy and drowsy after surgery, and you may feel drowsy for a couple of days or longer depending on your surgical procedure
