ANESTHESIOLOGY
  • Anesthesiology is the use of medicine to prevent
the feeling of pain or another sensation during
surgery or other procedures that might be
    painful.
  • Anesthesiologist specializes in giving and
managing anesthetics and specially trained nurse
anesthetist provides assistance in the same
  • Types of Anesthesia general, local and regional
(spinal, epidural / caudal, nerve blocks)

3
Before Surgery
  • Examination of the type of anesthesia
  • Determine the best combination of drugs and
    dosages
  • Inspection of your mouth opening and
visualization of the soft tissues of the pharynx
  • Condition of teeth and location of dental crowns
    and caps are checked
  • Neck flexibility and head extension observed.
  • If an endotracheal tube is indicated and airway
management is deemed difficult, then alternative
placement methods such as fiber optic intubation
    may be used
  • Eating and drinking restrictions for 12-24 hours
    before surgery
  • IV is placed into arm before surgery for the
    injection of anesthesia
  • Vital Body Sign Sensors to monitor vital body
    signs

4
During Surgery
  • CRNA is always under the supervision of the
    anesthesiologist
  • Oxygen mask is provided if you are having local
    or regional anesthesia, or sedation
  • If you need an endotracheal tube, your
anesthesiologist will take every precaution to
avoid any complications during the placement and
    removal of it
  • As an alternative, your anesthesiologist may use
a Laryngeal Mask Airway (LMA) instead of an
endotracheal tube as it is an effective method of
assisting your breathing with a decreased
    likelihood of a sore throat
  • Anesthesia machines are used by anesthesia
providers to deliver the safest of anesthetics to
you during your surgery. The machine has vital
controls for the flow of oxygen, air, nitrous
    oxide, and anesthetics.

5
After Surgery
  • CRNA will take you to the post anesthesia care
unit (PACU) and will stay with you until a
recovery room nurse can safely care for you
  • Inform your recovery room nurse if you
experience nausea and vomiting after surgery
  • If you experience some discomfort and pain, you
would receive drugs for the relief
  • You will be sleepy and drowsy after surgery, and
you may feel drowsy for a couple of days or
longer depending on your surgical procedure
