Title: OCD
1Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
2Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) manifests as
obsessions or thoughts that are intrusive, yet
serve a unique and positive function for the
individual.
- Leads to compulsions, which serve a primary
purpose of lessening the anxiety that the
obsession has produced (Can become ritualistic). - Person can lose physical functions as well as
become very much socially detached.
3What causes OCD?
4Good Question!
5Possible Causes for OCD
- OCD is thought to develop during childhood, but
how it manifests can easily change from the
earlier onset to later adulthood. - OCD is thought by some to be a result of a
chemical imbalance in the brain, which in turn
causes dysfunction. This imbalance can be the
result of a persons genetics, or even the
symptom of an infection.
6And for the purposes of this Research Project,
Ill present the one other theory that exists
concerning the cause of OCD. (since after all,
my movie is The Aviator, whose main character
Howard Hughes suffers greatly from the disorder)
7And that theory is..
8Wait for it.
9And the theory that I believe Howard Hughes OCD
may have originally stemmed from is the theory
that assumes that it is some interaction of
organic and inorganic (genetics and life
experiences) that when combined, produce the
anxiety that is displayed in people who suffer
from OCD.
10In the following scene, several different
behaviors of OCD are displayed by Howard Hughes
(Leanardo DeCaprio) . The part that needs to be
closely watched is the ending when he sees the
reflection of his mother and himself.
This is important because Hughes grew up under
the strong influence of his mother who was
obsessed with protecting her son from all germs
and diseases. This little fact plays a big role
when one considers the behaviors Howard exhibited
as an adult.... But first-
Grab your popcorn and other snacks.

habit..ritualistic habit..ritualistic habit?
17Yes there is!!
18Though there are several different therapies
including Cognitive therapy that can come in the
form of individual therapy or group-based
treatment, the most successful form of treatment
comes in the form of pharmacological treatment.
Fuloxetine (Prozac) and Anafril are the two more
commonly used medications in treating OCD.
19Now, I know you are probably bored out of your
mind, so let me end this presentation with
something that has nothing do with OCD, but I
think is pretty funny and hey, its the last
day..so lets have a laugh ?
