Title: MJ/PE Collaboration Project 2011
1Dual Sports
2Dual Sports
- A dual sport is a set of two sports that are
similar. These sports can be similar in a lot of
ways, whether its because the skills needed for
each sport are alike or because they use a
similar technique. - Dual sports are physical activities that have
sets of rules or customs that are similar in many
ways. - These sports may or may not be of a competitive
nature. - Often sports refer to activities where the
physical capabilities of the competitor are a
huge determiner of the outcome (winning or
losing). - Mental acuity or equipment quality may be major
factors.
3Now we will look at a wide variety of sports that
have both similarities and differences.
- These sports are linked together in one way or
another with a common thread. - Therefore we call these sports DUAL SPORTS.
4Similarities between Tennis and Racquetball
- Both sports are racquet sports.
- Both, tennis and racquetball are played with
balls that are nearly the same size and shape. - Both sports allow 4 players to play in a doubles
match. - Both sports are played against an opponent.
5Differences between Tennis Racquetball
- A game is played to 15 points with two games in a
match. - In racquetball the length can't exceed 22 inches.
- Racquetball courts dont have nets since the
court is a walled room and you can hit against
the walls.
- The game can go back and forth until one of the
players reaches four points with a margin of two
points to win a game and then a set. The match is
played in a best of three or five sets format. - A tennis racket is not allowed to exceed 29
inches. - The court is rectangular with a net dividing the
middle. Lines are then drawn perpendicular to the
ends of the net. Another line is divided equally
between the two perpendicular line directly down
the middle of the court on both sides of the
court.
6Skills necessary for each sport

11Running Cross Country
12Running Cross Country Similarities
- Running cross country can take place on a
variety of terrain uphill, downhill, flat,
narrow track, rough ground, turns, etc. - For distance running cross country you need to
do a combination of long running, steady running,
short fast running, and sprinting. The key
difference is terrain.
13Running Cross Country Differences
- Running may take place anywhere.
- You are usually trying to improve your time
and/or distance. - The term running can refer to any of a variety of
speeds ranging from jogging to sprinting.
- Cross country uses a course that is not totally
paved . - Cross country forces you to race the person
rather than the clock. - Cross country champions are normally very good at
running both up and down hills and possess the
ability to maintain good speeds over rough and
uneven terrain.
14Running Cross County Workout
- Slow Steady Cardio
- Long duration (45min - 1 hour)
- Low intensity
- Burn fat and not carbs
- Preserve joints
- High Intensity Cardio
- Short duration (20min - 30min)
- High intensity (interval training)
- Burn tons of calories rev up your metabolism
throughout the day - Treat cardio like weights - explosive movements
(sprinting, etc)
15Lacrosse Field Hockey
- Similarities and Differences
16What are Lacrosse Field Hockey?
- The objective of lacrosse and field hockey are to
score more goals then the opposing team during
the allotted time limit.
17Similarities
- Lacrosse and field hockey have many similarities.
The most prominent of similarities are the
playing fields, the equipment, the teams, and the
goalies.
18Differences
- As does field hockey and lacrosse have many
similarities, they have many differences too. The
main difference is that in field hockey the ball
stays on the ground and is passed with the stick.
In lacrosse the ball is caught and thrown in the
air to other players with a mesh pouch at the end
of the stick.
19Skills Needed for Both Sports
- Speed, agility, power, balance, reaction time,
and coordination are all skills needed to play
lacrosse and field hockey. - Speed, agility, and balance are needed to run
down the field quickly without crashing into
teammates or other players. - Reaction time and coordination are needed to
catch, throw, and strike the ball while running
at the same time. - Power is needed to throw the ball in lacrosse and
strike it in field hockey. - As you can see, these are all very important
skills in both sports.
20Baseball Cricket
21Rules of Baseball
- The rules of baseball are quite simple.
- You cant have more than nine people on one team
on the field. - Two teams try to score more runs than the other.
- They use a baseball bat and try to swing and hit
the ball into the field. - A team scores one run each time a batter moves
completely around a circuit of four designated
spots called bases. - Each team is allowed 3 outs. There are nine
innings of play.
22Rules of Cricket
- Cricket is a game played between two teams made
up of eleven players each. - One team needs to bowl the other team out twice
and score more runs then them to win the match. - One of the main cricket rules is that for batsmen
to score runs they must run to each other's end
of the pitch (from one end to the other). In
doing this one run is scored. - They can also score runs by hitting boundaries. A
boundary scores the batsmen either 4 or 6 runs. - In this sport you get a bat like stick to hit the
ball with called a wicket.
23Similarities between Baseball Cricket
- They are both bat-and-ball games.
- Players of one team attempt to score points
known as runs by hitting a ball with a bat, while
the members of the other team field the ball in
an attempt to prevent scoring and to put batting
players out. - In both games, there is a defensive aspect to the
batting team with its "offensive" or "attacking"
aspect of trying to score runs. In cricket, the
batsman is attempting to defend the wicket. In
baseball, the batter is attempting to defend the
strike zone.
24Skills needed for Baseball Cricket
- Striking
- Running
- Throwing
- Catching
- Pitching
- Fielding
25Surfing and Snowboarding How are they the same?
- These sports are dual sports because they are so
much alike. In both sports you have to have a
board (a surfboard or a snowboard). They also use
really similar techniques. - In both you need balance, and the way you stand
on the board is similar one foot is in front of
the other one and your knees are bent, so you can
balance. - Although the snow and the ocean are different,
they have a lot of similarities, since both are
made of water.
26Snowboarding and Surfing How are they different?
- These sports are different mainly because when
you snowboard you have to have snow, and wherever
there is snow you cannot surf. - Also in surfing you stand on the board with bare
feet, and in snowboarding you have to have boots
or different snow shoes. - In snowboarding there are straps to hold your
feet in place so you dont fall off the board,
since you are going downhill. In surfing you are
on a flatter surface.
27Snowboarding Skills necessary
- In snowboarding balance is needed so you dont
fall down. - You need to be able to put pressure to the board
so you can move faster. - You may need lessons your first time so you dont
seriously injure yourself. - You need coordination so you can react fast if
you need to dodge something.
28Surfing Skills necessary
- You need balance and coordination so you dont
repeatedly fall off of the board. - You need to know how to swim, specifically in the
ocean since it is a lot different than swimming
in a pool. - A high level of cardiovascular fitness, sometimes
you have to paddle on your board for 3 minutes or
more. - Lessons- so you know what to expect and can be
safe in the water.
29Similarities of Badminton Handball
- Both have a goal.
- They are played in the air not on the ground.
- Both use their hands not their feet.
- Both played by 2 teams.
- Both played at a fast pace.
30Differences of Badminton Handball
- Badminton uses an instrument and handball does
not. - Players in handball make body contact when
badminton does not. - Badminton uses a birdie or a shuttlecock and
handball uses a ball.
31Skills Necessary
- Speed, stamina, agility, power, tactics and
mental fitness.
- Agility, balance, coordination, power, speed and
reaction time.
32Cheerleading Gymnastics
- Similarities You need to be flexible, physical
strength, and you have to be good at tumbling.
They both also take a lot of time to do. Before
anything everyone has to stretch.
33Differences in Cheerleading Gymnastics
- Cheerleading You must be able to lift your own
weight if not more. You can take cheerleading as
a job one day.
- Gymnastics You put your body through constant
stress. You can take gymnastics on as a job but
most of the people who do end up retiring because
of weakening of the bones.
34Skills for Cheerleading Gymnastics
- Gymnastics You need strength, speed, power,
flexible, and focus.
- Cheerleading You need strength, flexible,
focus, power, and dance skills.
35Dual Sports
36Squash
- Squash is a racket sport that is similar to
racquetball and tennis. - The sport is played in a room of four walls.
- To play the game, you must hit the ball on either
the front wall or side wall but making sure it
goes below the out line. - The ball can only bounce once on the floor and
the opponent always has to retrieve it back to
the wall. - So it is similar to racquetball but slightly
different.
37Ping Pong (Table Tennis)
- Table Tennis is a sport that is very similar to
tennis because it is like a miniature version of
tennis. - You use rackets and the rules are similar to
tennis a serve and return game. - The player must first serve and the second player
must receive the serve and then they keep
receiving each other until the ball bounces two
times on the table or if the ball goes out of the
table. - Its very easy to play and it is a lot of fun.
38Squash and Ping Pong How They are Similar and
Different
- Squash and ping pong are very similar because
they both use rackets and they both consist of a
ball. - However, they are different because squash
doesnt use a table to play and squash use
rackets that are much bigger than the ones used
in ping pong.
39Ice skating and Rollerblading
40Similarities
- (Ice skating and rollerblading are considered
dual sports because theyre so similar. ) - These sports allow you to do special tricks such
as spins, jumps, etc. - Both sports involve types of skates for footwear.
- Gliding is a simple skill commonly used in these
sports. - These sports are often taken place in a rink.
- The skates are made with leather and most likely
the colors of white, black, or brown.
41DIFFERENCES
- (Ice skating and rollerblading are also
considered dual sports because they are so
similar but still have their differences) - Ice skates have blades Rollerblades have wheels.
- In rollerblading, you can do inline skating,
obstacle course skating, and speed skating. - In ice skating, you can do ice hockey, figure
skating, free skating, speed skating, and ice
dancing.
