Title: ADDING AND INSTALLING A SECOND or Multiple OPERATION SYSTEM OS
1ADDING AND INSTALLING A SECOND (or
Multiple)OPERATION SYSTEM (OS)
- 1. Different Methods Available
- 2. Procedure using Acronis Disk Director
Suite(suitable for adding older as well as newer
OSs)
2Why to add Multiple OSsOS is abbreviation for
Operating System
- Just because you want to.
- Need to run applications or devices that do not
work on current OS. - Compatibility or comparison with various
operations such as working with others using a
different OS. - Any other reason you have.
3DIFFERENT METHODS
- When you are upgrading to a newer Windows OS
using the upgrade install disk . - This is only applicable when adding a newer
OS.Must be installed in order from older to
newer. - You need to select custom installation.
- Using Virtual Machine Software.
- Miscellaneous methods found on various web sites.
- Using Partitioning Software Such as Acronis Disk
Director of Symantec Partition Magic.
4Applicable to all methods
- The real requirements for running multiple OSs
are those necessary to support the guest or
second operating systems that you will run. Add
the disk requirements for every guest OS youll
install and the necessary memory requirements for
the most demanding guest OS. If running Virtual
(VM software) you will to add memory for each
Guest OS running simultaneously. - For VM software, refer to requirements listed by
the applicable software company. - For multiple OSs installed on separate
partitions or volumes, you will need to have
enough free space to accommodate the additional
space indicated on the OS install disks (allow
extra room for any programs you will be
including).
5Notes for standard Windows Procedures
- How to create a multiple-boot system using
Windows procedure. - Go to web site for instructions
support.microsoft.com/kb/306559 Note You can
only install a single instance of Windows 95,
Windows 98, or Windows Me in a multiple-boot
configuration. You cannot configure a computer to
multiple-boot Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows
Me because each of these platforms use the same
boot file. For example, you can use Windows 95,
Windows 2000, and Windows XP, but you cannot use
Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows XP. Install
the multiple operating systems into separate
volumes, in the following order MS-DOS Windows
95, Windows 98, or Windows Me and then Windows
XP.
6Notes Virtual (VM) software.
- Virtual Machine (VM) Software lets you create
separate virtual machines on your desktop, each
of which virtualizes the hardware of a complete
physical computer. - Since VM software does not run in NATIVE mode,
problems can be more difficult to resolve and in
some cases programs may not work properly .

8This presentation will focus primarily using
Acronis Disk Director (Vs. 10) One of the key
benefits offered by Acronis OS Selector is the
ability to add almost any new operating system to
a PC, even if it already has one or more
operating systems installed. Using Acronis OS
Selector, a user is able to install Several
different copies of the same OS (e.g. Windows
XP) Different operating systems from the
same developers (e.g. Microsoft Windows 98 and
Windows XP) Operating systems from various
developers (e.g. a Windows version and a Linux
variant). In all cases, Acronis OS Selector
eliminates software conflicts that might affect
operating system stability and even result in
failures.
9Installing and using several operating systems on
a single PC Using Acronis Disk Director
- This demo will be adding Millennium METo a
computer running Windows XP
10Preparation
- Have fully licensed installation disk for new OS.
- If you are using an upgrade copy, you will need
disks from the previous licensed copy to
validate. - Make sure you have enough free space to
accommodate new primary partition. - Back up current computer configuration, or at
least all critical files (dont forget your
email).
11IF YOU HAVENT ALREADY -
- INSTALL ACRONIS DISK DIRECTOR SUITE
- CREATE ACRONIS BOOTABLE RESCUE MEDIA DISK
- THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT AS IT WILL ALLOW YOU TO
RECOVER FROM ANY ERRORS OR PROBLEMS - Install Acronis OS Selector.
12Xp View of partitions B4 new
The above view from Disk Management shows that
Volume (drive) C has the most free space which is
where we will create the new primary
partition. Note Disk Management may not be
available on XP Home edition, but comparable view
is available using Acronis Disk Director.
13Create new primary partition using Acronis Disk
Director (DD) Suite
Acronis DD home screenAutomatic Mode
14Click on Create Partition which brings up dialog
box to choose unallocated space or free space in
existing partition. In this case we will use free
space in existing partition.Click Next
15In this case we choose Disk 1 then click next.
16In this case we are choosing Volume (drive) COf
course your choose would be where you wanted to
create free space.Note that you can take free
space from multiple drives as needed
17After clicking next it will lock the drives on
Disk 1 and then open dialog to choose the size of
the new partition.I have chosen to make the new
partition 1GB to allow for some extra programs.
click next.
1GB
18Choose Primary Partition type.After installing
the new OS will set Active drive according to
which OS you are starting.Click next.
19Next select the appropriate file system to create
according to the OS your installing.Since we are
installing Window ME, we need to use FAT32.Click
next.
20Deferred to default to choose logical drive
letter - G.When you make this partition active
and restart computer, drive letters may change
automatically depending on the OS installed.
Choosing to not assign may make it invisible in
the current operation system.Click next.
21Enter the label for the new partition.I used C_2
since this drive will show as drive C when
starting Windows MEIt will show as drive G when
running XP which will allow sharing files in XP.
You can leave the label blank if desired.Click
next.
C_2
22Review information and if OK Click Finish.
23Click on operations or checkered flag to commit
and run the process.Close all other windows and
applications. Then click on proceed and Reboot
Computer when prompted.(You will loose all
operations if you dont accept the reboot prompt)
24Click on reboot.Note You will loose your
settings and the operation will be canceled if
you do not reboot at this point.
25After reboot, open Disk Director or Windows Disk
Management and check to make sure partition was
created successfully.
Above view from Windows XP Pro Disk
Management. May not have this feature on XP Home
edition but you will be able to see a comparable
view in Acronis DD.
26Make sure you have installation disk for new OS
and make the new partition active. This can be
done using either Acronis Disk Director or
Windows Disk Management.
Set view to manual mode
Above view shows Acronis DD with view set to
manual mode. Select (Highlight) new partition and
click on Set Active in Advanced options. Note
read message when dialog box appears.
Then click OK.
27Next insert your bootable installation disk.
Cancel close any screens that appear from
inserting this disk.Choose OS Selector from
Tools and select the disk you inserted.
It is important to have a boot disk compatible
with your new OS. If your disk is not bootable,
insert the boot disk or floppy to use with the OS
and restart your computer.
28Click the checkered flag (boot) in the OS
selector.Make sure all other programs are closed
and click Ok to reboot. This will boot you into
the new active partition and assuming you will
start the boot process on your installation disk.
29- At this point your computer will reboot into the
new active primary partition and access the boot
disk you provided usually included on the OS
install disk. The OS install disk will run and
start the installation procedure. - If you used a boot disk without the OS, insert
the OS disk and start from the DOS prompt. - Some OEM disk will start an OEM setup. This
will be evident by remarks to the like that you
need to remove files, format partition and that
it cannot install without reformatting the Hard
Drive (you need to distinguish between a
partition and formatting the disk). If this
happens do not continue. Quit and escape to the
DOS prompt. Change the directory at the DOS
prompt and make sure to go to the root directory
(i.e. C). Type dir (without quotes) and
enter. You should then see the basic install.exe
in the list. Type the indicating name exactly as
shown without the .exe and hit the enter key.
This should start a standard installation of you
OS.
30Example of DOS Prompt
- First line above is the current directory where
opened. - Second line typed cd \ and hit enter which
took it to the root directory shown in the third
line.
31After you install your new OS and reboot you may
or may not see the Acronis OS selector.
Depending on the OS installed you may want to use
this when starting your computer. In fact you
may not be able to get back to your original OS
without it.
Above view of OS Selector after installing
Windows ME
32If you dont see this when rebooting (and want
to), insert your Bootable Rescue Media Disk and
reboot. Click on Activate OS Selector and follow
instructions to activate. You will then be able
to choose which OS you want to start.
Above view of OS Selector after installing
Windows ME
33Acronis OS Selector has various options. One
being to deactivate and activate as needed so you
dont see it every time you boot if you only
occasionally change OS.

Automatic Mode
36Options to consider
- There are other options available when setting up
your new partition such as making it hidden so
that its not visible to other OSs. - Partitions using NTFS file format are not visible
to partitions using variations of FAT format (FAT
16, FAT32, etc). - You need to create an area or another partition
for shared files that can be seen by partitions
using different file formats. Ex. a partition
using FAT32 which is visible to both FAT and NTFS
file formats.
37Final Tips
- Acronis Disk Director can be run entirely from
the Bootable Rescue Media Disk. This can be
useful if you are having trouble getting some
functions to work properly. - After or before installing your second OS
(Operating System), download support files and
drivers . However, be aware that if you are
installing an older OS on a new computer there
may not be hardware updates or drivers. - Help files do not include a search function. One
way to get around this is to copy the PDF user
manual to your hard drive. You can then use the
find or search function on your PDF reader (i.e.
Acrobat Reader). Ive used this technique on
other programs which is frequently more useful
than the help files.
