Title: CDs

1
CDs
  • CD replaced vinyl records and audiocassettes for
most users. CD ROMs have replaced floppy disks.
  • CDs are 120mm discs that contain a layer of
    reflective metal-alloy foil encased in
    transparent plastic.
  • The CD contain a single spiral track .
  • 74 minutes CD 650 MB data, 80 minute CD 700
    MB data
  • We were only just getting used to the notion that
those 50GB Blu-ray discs and recorders were
totally beyond our reach when the news comes that
Sony is prepping an even more capacious 8-layer
version of the Blu-ray disc that can hold up to
200GB of data. No word on when it'll hit, but a
4-layer version with storage capacity of 100GB is
expected in 2007, so it'll be sometime after
    that.

Components of a CD

Recordable CDs

  • x number of times faster the rate of CD spin
  • 1X spins 210 to 539 RPM
  • 2X twice as fast as 1X
  • xX accurate up to 12X

8
DVDs
  • 12 cm diameter like CDs
  • Thinner than CDs
  • Uses different encoding method CDs
  • Requires a narrower laser beam, higher density
  • DVD 0.74 microns wide CD1.6 microns wide
  • DVD-R and DVD-RW
  • Internal or external
  • Internal IDE, Serial ATA, SCSI
  • External FireWire or USB 2.0
  • 1X to 16X (1X transfers 1.38 MB per sec)
  • To play a movie the system needs an MPEG-2
decoder (b4 was incorporated in graphics card,
    current software decoders)

9
DVD types
  • Standard DVD disc 4.7 GB capacity
  • DVD discs contain the UDF (Universal Disk Format)
    file system.
  • DVD-5
  • DVD-9
