Heroes of Space Exploration

• This year the first and second graders of ALPHA
  studied Systems in Space here are just a few of
  the people we studied.
• Each student chose his or her favorite Hero of
  Space and drew a picture in kid pix about their
  hero and took notes on the 5 Ws (who, what,
  where, when, why and sometimes how)

Dr. Mae Jemison

• Madilynn

• Mae Carol Jemison October 17, 1956 - was the
  first African-American woman in space.
• She flew on the space shuttle Endeavor as the
  Mission Specialist the mission lifted off on
  September 12, 1992, and landed on September 20,
  1992.

• Not only does she speak her native English,
  Dr. Jemison speaks fluent Russian, Japanese, and
  Swahili. Jemison appeared on an episode of the TV
  show "Star Trek The Next Generation" in 1993.

Missions

• NASA selected Dr. Jemison for astronaut training
  in 1987. Her first mission was aboard the Shuttle
  Endeavor in September of 1992. Dr. Jemison was
  Science Mission Specialist on the flight. When
  the Endeavor blasted into orbit, Dr. Mae Jemison
  became the first African-American woman to enter
  space.

• Sir Issac Newton was born in 1642.
• He was an English scientist, astronomer, and a
  mathematician.
• He invented a new kind of mathematics
• Sir Issac Newton was born in a small village in
  England.
• He did all this because he was dedicated to what
  he was doing. He wouldnt stop until he got what
  he was doing right.

• His father died before he was born.
• After his mother got remarried he lived with his
  mother and his stepfather.
• Issac Newton entered Trinity Collage in Cambridge
  university in 1661.

  grandmother.
• He didnt pay attention in school.
• Issac Newton was a serious and thoughtful kid
  with a strange gift to concentrate very hard.
• When his stepfather died he was sixteen when his
  mother told him to leave school and be in charge
  of the farm.

  became successful and started making bigger and
  harder inventions and soon became successful at
  that.
• He started working with other top scientists in
  the world.

• He got his PHD at Cambridge Collage University in
  1948 and got tested by NASA and became a
  orbiter.

Yuri Gagarin

• Yuri Gagarin was born near Moscow, Russia on
  March 9, 1934.
• Yuri joined the Soviet Air Force in 1955. By
  1959, he was training to become a cosmonaut which
  is Russia's astronaut.
• He was the first man ever in space.
• On April 12, 1961 Yuri Gagarin became the first
  human to orbit Earth!
• The name of his spacecraft was Vostok 1. Vostok 1
  had two sections. One section was for Yuri. The
  second section was for supplies needed for
  Gagarin to live such as oxygen and water.

• Vostok 1 circled Earth at a speed of 27,400
  kilometers per hour. The flight lasted 108
  minutes. Vostok's reentry was controlled by a
  computer. Yuri Gagarin did not land inside of
  Vostok 1. He ejected from the spacecraft and
  landed by parachute.
• He joined a flying club before he died.
• He died on March 27, 1968 in a plane crash
• Yuri Gagarin was killed in a plane crash before
  he could travel in space a second time.

  space. Animals were sent to space to make sure it
  would be safe for people.
• There were many creatures sent into space
  insects, mice, monkeys, dogs, and cats and many
  more.

• Albert II became the first monkey in space on
  June 14,1949.He died on impact after a parachute
  failure.
• The first Monkey-nauts to survive were Able
  and Baker. They were launched on December
