Title: Rice King The Amazing Rice Pulling Contraption

1
Rice King(The Amazing Rice Pulling Contraption)
  • Michael Wieck
  • Derek Herring
  • Jonathan Rogers
  • Colin Shipley

2
Problem Statement
  • Design a devise that will move rice from the
bottom of a ramp to the top of a ramp.
  • The devise has to deposit the rice into a 3 x
3 hole at the top of the ramp.

3
Possible Solutions
  • Sliding Bag and Pulley System
  • Lever Arm Design
  • Rolling Cart and Pulley System

4
Design Criteria
5
Design Criteria
6
Sliding Bag and Pulley
  • Use simple gear/pulley ratio
  • Ramp at top
  • Rip bag to deposit rice
  • Cheap Material
  • Can modify container to hold maximum
  • Simple

7
Design Pictures
8
Engineering Analysis
  • Low friction
  • Simple (the simplest solution is usually the
    best)
  • Less points of failure
  • No complex pulley system
  • Repeatable Results

9
Math Model
10
Cost Analysis
  • Cardboard 0.14
  • Duct Tape 0.07
  • Paper bag (x2) 0.02
  • Dowel Rods 0.35
  • String 0.36
  • Hot Glue Sticks 0.18
  • Wire Hanger 0.16
  • Total 1.29

11
Performance Analysis
  • First Run 3.01 lbs
  • Second Run 0.00 lbs
  • String lengthened at release point, preventing
    release
  • Cost/Weight - .43 /lb

12
Final Scoring
  • Highest Average Weight Moved 5.5 lbs
  • Minimum Average Cost/Weight 2.0 /lb
  • Final Score 10793 pts.
  • A 3950 pts.

13
Successful Test Run
Video Doesnt function, it is posted online.
14
Design Improvements
  • Square knot on release string to prevent
    lengthening of release point
  • Bigger release opening on bag
  • New taping strategy used on bag

15
Recommendations
  • Effective design
  • Cost Efficient
  • Effective load capacity
  • Not prone to failure
  • Repeatable results
  • Easily Manufactured (1hour total build time)
  • Simple

16
Lessons Learned and Conclusions
  • Check final designs for wear and tear before
    competition
  • Time management is key with group projects
  • Division of labor is wise once final design has
    been chosen
  • Choose one main goal and perfect it
  • Understand all design parameters
  • The simplest solution is usually the best
