Anti-fascist Protection Barrier    East
Berliners began to migrate west because of the
better opportunities that were afforded them in
the Democratic controlled sectors of Berlin.
  13 August 1961 USSR/GDR began construction of
the wall to prevent further Brain Drain on the
Economy of East Berlin.   Dimensions
Approximately 70 miles long and 13 feet
high. Fortified with trenches, barbed wire, a
second wall, and armed guards who fired without
warning. Approximately 940 people were killed in
the process of fleeing.   Check Point Charlie
