031 OBSERVING ONION AND TOMATO CELLS
It is very simple to observe the cells of onions
and tomato.
MATERIAL REQUIRED
An onion and a tomato A tweezers or forceps or a
knife (under adult supervision) A students
microscope

Take an onion, remove the outer dry peels. From
the inner soft peel, just peel the membrane using
tweezers or any forceps or a sharp knife. Place
the membrane flat on the surface of a clean glass
slide and observe the cells under a light
students microscope. To make the cells look clear
you may add one drop of iodine (available in
pharmacy as tincture iodine can be used).

Take a ripe tomato, pierce with any sharp object
(knife shown here), place a drop of its juice on
a glass slide and do observe the cells.
Compare the cells between onion and tomato.
Referring the diagram or pictures in your book
identify these cells. Try with other vegetables
and fruits.
