Title: 072 IMBIBITION
1072 IMBIBITION
This experiment explains the principle of
imbibition of water by the seeds and the pressure
it can offer on the container.
MATERIALS REQUIRED
An empty water bottle Balloons Chick pea or green
gram
Balloons
Green gram
Chick pea
2Fill the chick pea in plastic bottle and or a
balloon. Add water and close.
Dry seeds (Chick pea works best, but it can be
tried with green gram also) can be filled in a
plastic bottle or a balloon. Water is then added
and the set-up is set aside for some time.
3Bottle cracks and pea spill out
Balloon behaves like a ball
Within an hour or two, the increase in size of
the seeds due to imbibition of water will cause
the bottle to burst. The balloon swells with the
increase in size of the seeds, and then behaves
like a ball.
