A Mammals World
  • Class Mammalia is a relatively small group of
animals that are very well known. There are
approx. 4500 species of mammals, with very few
left to be discovered. Some discoveries are still
possible, as is the case of the cloudrunner, a
squirrel-sized mammal discovered in the late
    1990's.

3
Mammal Characteristics
  • HAIR or FUR Hair usually covers the body of
mammals but, in certain marine species, may be
present on the young or consist of only a few
    whiskers.

4
Mammal Characteristics
  • LIMBS Mammals typically have four limbs, with
toes that terminate into nails, claws or hooves.
Mammal limbs consist of arms, legs, wings, and
    flippers.

5
Mammal Characteristics
  • TEETH With the exception of Whalebone Whales
and Anteaters, all adult mammals have teeth.

6
Mammal Characteristics
  • REPRODUCTION Mammals typically nourish their
young while they are developing within their
bodies through a placenta and give birth to them
live. Two exceptions are the Duckbill Platypus
and the Tasmania, which lay eggs.

7
Mammal Characteristics
  • MAMMARY GLANDS - Mammal moms produce milk from
mammary glands to feed and nourish their young.

8
Mammal Characteristics
  • ENDOTHERMIC Also known as warm blooded. This
does not mean that their blood is warm, yet,
their body temperature is controlled internally
and constantly maintained within a range of a few
    degrees.

    beaver, prairie dog)
  • 8. Ungulates (cow, sheep, goat, pig, camel,
    giraffe, deer)
  • 9. Trunk-nosed (elephant)
  • 10. Marine (whale, dolphin, manatee)
