  • Overview of Databases Features

Periodicals Index Online and Periodicals Archive
Online are the new versions of the Periodicals
Contents Index (PCI) and PCI Full Text
databases. PERIODICALS INDEX ONLINE is a
citation database of almost 15million articles
from journals in the arts, humanities and social
sciences, stretching as far back as
1665. PERIODICALS ARCHIVE ONLINE provides access
to the digitised backfiles of hundreds of
journals in those same subject areas. Both
databases contain a wealth of international
content.

Users can combine a variety of fields in a single
search or search across all fields at once, with
the Keyword(s) field.
They can also choose to restrict their search to
articles or book reviews (or to omit
them). Results can be limited to only those
citations with links to full text and users may
specify how they wish their results to appear.
5
Citations are returned in a clear and
easy-to-read format. Users can instantly add
citations to their Marked List. Results can be
quickly re-ordered or filtered using the Results
Options.
6
Search results are returned with a set of dynamic
filters, which the user can select to refine and
focus their results based on summary
information. This example has the Journal
Subjects filter expanded, showing the user the
subjects in which their search query has been
found most often as well as giving them the
opportunity to refine their results to one of
those subjects.

Users who also have access to Periodicals Archive
Online, will be given direct links to articles in
the archive.
Libraries can set up Periodicals Index Online to
send OpenURL-formatted links to their
link-resolver database, to help users locate
copies of the article. These links are
customisable and can be textual or graphical.
9
Links from Periodicals Index Online to full text
material in Periodicals Archive Online open the
latter in a new window.
10
Users can also locate journals, either by
searching, or browsing title lists.
11
The journal search screen allows users to search
for journal records. The Quick Search tool
appears on almost every page and can be used to
locate either article or journal records
12
Journal results are presented in a similar way to
article results.
13
Records can be added to the Marked List with a
single click Journal titles link to full journal
records and lists of issues.
Icons show whether full text links are available
to Periodicals Archive Online or JSTOR.
14
Full journal records provide more information
about titles along with lists of issues.
15
Issues can be expanded to show the contents
within.
16
The Marked List allows users to store article and
journal citations and return to them. To keep
them between sessions, they should be moved to
the My Archive area.
17
My Archive allows users to save searches for
using again in the future, as well as storing
selected records. Each My Archive is protected
by a username and password.
18
Periodicals Archive Online works in the same way
as the Index, with the addition of full text
content.
19
Users are given a range of options with which
they may navigate their results or add them to
their selected records.
20
Searches within the text of articles will allow
users to find instances of their query term,
using on-screen highlighting.
21
Periodicals Archive Online also includes
unindexed, non-article matter so that
researchers can now find useful information about
the journals themselves and the circumstances of
their publication and use.
22
A range of support materials, additional
information and administrative features are
provided in the Information Resources area. From
here, librarians can download free MARC records
for journals in Periodicals Archive Online or
Periodicals Index Online, set up connections to
their link resolver, find information on
searching the databases using Z39.50, activate
links to JSTOR and view usage statistics.
