  • Start with activity

Objectives
  • Students will understand segregation and the
    approaches taken to desegregate.
  • Students will learn about the major events and
    people involved in the civil rights movement.
  • Students will compare/contrast people, events,
    and documents

Materials
  • Copies of historical documents
  • Chalk

Procedures
  • Discuss the conditions of segregation and what
    the students know about the civil rights movement
    have students raise their hands.
  • Have 20 minute lecture about the Civil Rights
    Movement.
  • Hand out reading materials- work in groups to
    discuss and debate.

Lecture topics
  • Jim Crow laws, state laws that mandated racial
    separation
  • Attempts at desegregation. Talk about the
    Plessey vs. Ferguson case and the term separate
    but equal and Brown vs. the Board of Education
    when separate but equal was struck down.
  • Introduce the people of the Civil Rights
    Movement. I will talk about Martin Luther King
    Jr., Malcolm X.
