  • Born in Omaha, Nebraska
  • Father was a Baptist Preacher
  • Father was also a leader for Marcus Garveys
    black nationalist organization and the Universal
    Negro Improvement Association.
  • Both groups stressed black pride and independence
    along with being separated from whites.

  • Family was harassed by the KKK and other white
    supremacy groups.
  • House was burned down when he was 4 years old.
  • Father was murdered when he was 6 years old.
  • Lived with widowed mother and barley managed to
    get by during the great depression.

Malcolm X and the Nation of Islam
  • The ultimate goal of the NOI was separation from
    whites in order to achieve independent black
    nation-hood.
  • Became a member in 1953, Malcolm was very devoted
    to the nationalist religious group.
  • Malcolm quickly became Muhammads most valuable
    disciple because of his ways to excite and
    recruit the urban ghettos of American and their
    young black followers.

  • Malcolm X did not like whites at all. He
    considered them irredeemably evil.
  • He said for African Americans to love the people
    who for centuries have committed unspeakable
    crimes against would be outright insane.

    powerfully attractive to people whose self esteem
    had been damaged by the surrounding white racist
    society.
