3Introduction
- This study examines some of the factors that
influence Afghan students to be socially isolated
from the rest of the students of AUCA. - The separation of a person from his/her
environment or context (for some reasons) set
apart (Oxford dictionary). - Moreover, the study endeavors to find out the
origin and cause of this issue from Afghan
students point of view.
4Method (s) and Data analysis
- Semi-structured interviewing, observation, and
visual method like, photographs of Afghan - Interviews were conducted with 10 individuals
included in the study, 5 males and 5 females
(students of AUCA) - All the interviews were coded
5Findings
- Two main findings in the study language and
gender - Afghan students inability to talk in Russian
was one of the evidences of how language can be a
cause of isolation between them and other
students who are able to communicate using
Russian language.
6Language as a barrier
Language is one of the factors, which makes
Afghan students isolated from the rest of AUCA
students. It is because if you do not understand
the language of one community you cannot
communicate more with them. It happened with me,
I have got friends from AUCA who badly talk in
English and they want me to talk with them in
Russian. My Russian is not very good, but still
I try to talk, because when you are able to learn
how to talk in the language of one community,
they will accept you as a part of them. You,
yourself became able to understand them and feel
their feelings.
7Gender
- Gender was another factor of Afghan students
isolation from the rest, which had been mentioned
by most of the respondents. - The results indicate that because of Afghans
strict Islamic and traditional rules Afghan girls
were less likely to communicate with both males
and females of non-Afghans comparing with Afghan
males. - I think isolation is more attachable to Afghan
females than males. Girls are afraid that their
relations with foreigners here will have a
negative effect in their future life, not only
their life, but according to Afghans culture to
their family life as well.

11Limitation of the study
- Respondents belief and trust
- Competition among Afghan students at the AUCA,
thus, they were less likely to open up and
disclose their daily problems that they face
regarding language at the AUCA. - Daily interaction between the researcher and
respondents, also there are some problems of
ethnic division - Fair of misunderstanding
- Thus, they did not honestly open up to me
12Discussion and Conclusion
- The study was useful to gain additional
knowledge and more understanding of the
phenomenon of social isolation between Afghan
students and the rest of AUCA students. - Non-Afghan researchers/ another study on
perception of non-Afghans - More studies can create more knowledge on this
issue and help in better communication of
students who come from main cities of Afghanistan
such as, the capital of Afghanistan, Kabul, other
cities like, Mazar-e-Sharif, Heart, Baghlan etc.
