Limitations of Point Source Control

• Cannot control diffuse inputs to sewerage systems
• Issues of historical land contamination
• Land use/development impacts
• Product control?

Conclusions

• Massive improvements in water quality through
  improving sewerage and sewage treatment
• Increasing emphasis on other issues needed, eg
  diffuse pollution
• Need to ensure appropriate implementation of the
  WFD
• Need to work in partnership to deliver further
  cost-effective improvements
• SMURF can make a contribution!
