an anecdotal observation
  • December 3, 2005
  • Lia (3 years old) is sitting at the lunch table.
She has a sandwich in front of her. Lia tells the
ECE next to her that she cant eat her sandwich.
The ECE suggests she try and eat a bit and
proceeds to cut the half sandwich into quarters.
Lia puts her head on the table and cries But I
    didnt want MORE!

  • This observation shows that Lia can not yet think
about the pieces still being part of the whole.
All she sees is more to eat. Piaget describes
this as one of the limitations of preschool
thoughtthe inability to conserve. Lia can not
yet understand that even though it looks like
there is more, it is still the same amount of
    sandwich.
