4 Year Old Children
  • There are an estimated 13,500 4-year olds in
    Montgomery County.
  • Based on MCPS FARMS rate of 29.4 for elementary
    children the largest number of four year olds
    potentially eligible for FARMS in 2008 is 3,969.
  • Source Birth rates 2000-2005, MCPS enrollment
    2000-2007 from MCPS Master Plans

Child Care Capacity
  • 1,447 child care programs in Montgomery County
    have the capacity to serve 34,382 children from 0
    to 12 years of age.
  • 22,440 children between the ages of 2 and 4 years
    old can be served in centers and home-based
    settings.
  • 233 center-based programs have the capacity to
    serve 15,559 children between the ages of 2 and 4
    years old.
  • 951 family providers have the capacity to serve
    6,881 children between the ages of 2 and 4 years
    old.
  • Head Start/Pre-K serves 3,481 3 and 4 year olds.

Availability of Regulated Programs
  • Both family child care and centers are
    distributed widely throughout the county.
  • Throughout the county, availability of space in
    licensed child care programs for children aged
    0-5 years varies greatly.
  • Only 2 of parents contacted after 2 months of
    receiving referrals from LOCATE reported they
    could not find available preschool care that
    meets their needs.

Availability of Higher Quality Programs and
Credentialed Staff
  • Availability of accredited programs and those
    with credentialed providers is limited.
  • 70 of 429 (15)center-based programs have
    achieved state or national accreditation and 11
    of 1,018 (1) of family providers are nationally
    accredited.
  • 83 of 429 (19) center-based programs have staff
    with the Maryland Child Care Credential and 112
    of 1,018 (11) of family providers have the
    credential.
