3
Indoor Air Quality Concerns
  • In recent years, comparative risk studies
performed by EPAs headquarters and regional
offices have consistently ranked indoor air
pollution among the top five environmental risks
to peoples health. Thus, for many people, the
risks to health may be greater due to exposure to
    air pollution indoors than outdoors.

4
Indoor Air Pollutants
  • The Centers for Disease Control categorizes
    pollutants as
  • 1. Particulates aka allergens - in the 2.5 ()
    micron range consist of
  • inorganic pollutants such as dust mite
    feces, dead human skin
  • cells, animal dander, airborne mold spores,
    pollen, ragweed and others.
  • They are most likely to be filtered by the
hair in the nose or throat.
  • 2. Bioaerosols aka respirable size particles -
    in the
  • 0.022 to 2.5 micron range, they are most
    likely
  • to be inhaled and deposited in the alveoli of
    the
  • lungs. They consist of viruses, bacteria,
    mold spores
  • and environmental cigarette smoke and are
    considered
  • more toxic.
  • 3. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) organic
  • chemicals which are not associated with
    particles.
  • They are emitted by a wide range of products
    such as

5
  • The Goal?
  • To create a healthier
  • Indoor environment
  • with a reduction of
  • occupant exposures
  • to pollutants and a
  • corresponding
  • decrease in human
  • health risks.

6
  • The Dilemma?
  • What is available to reduce all the three
    categories of pollutants?
  • It is well known and recognized that air filters
are designed to screen particulates from the air
stream. However, typical residential air filters
do not adequately provide solutions for the other
    two categories.
  • Photocatalytic oxidation provides one of the
most viable solutions to the problem of indoor
air contamination by bioaerosols and volatile
    organic chemicals .

7
The Technology
  • Photocatalytic technology involves
  • shining ultraviolet light on a surface
  • coated with titanium dioxide.

  • This produces a molecular reaction, which
attacks molecules of volatile organic chemicals
in the air, including those which cause odors.
These are broken down into simple, harmless
substances, water and carbon dioxide. This
reaction also kills and decomposes bacteria,
    viruses and mold spores.
  • Simply put, in PCO using ultraviolet light, the
pollutants are destroyed in a three-step process
  • The pollutant adheres to the surface of the
    catalyst (grid).
  • 2. The pollutant and catalyst are then exposed to
    the photons of UV light.
  • The light energy activates the catalyst, which
break down pollutants into nontoxic products.

8
Advantages of PCO
  • High destruction efficiencies at room
    temperatures
  • No chemical additives
  • No residual ozone
  • High oxidation yields for gas phase reactant and
    odors
  • Low energy requirements
  • Complete oxidation of organics to CO2 and H2O
  • Applies to a large number of organics
  • Works in humid conditions
  • Negligible pressure drop in duct system
  • Low system cost

9
Technology Recognition
  • The benefits for a closed environment such as a
nuclear submarine are obvious the system is
    cheap, low-powered, lightweight, easily
maintained and has few or no consumable
components which require changing (Navy News)
  • Photo-catalysis is a promising technology that
uses UV light to drive oxidation and reduction
reactions on catalyst surfaces. These reactions
convert to water and carbon dioxide. (U.S.
    Environmental Protection Agency)
  • Photocatalytic oxidation is a low-temperature,
destructive process that uses ultraviolet light
    and a titanium dioxide semiconductor
photocatalyst to generate highly reactive species
    for destruction of organic molecules.
    (Environmental Security Technology Certification
    Program)
  • Photocatalysis has been used successfully for
    the disinfection and
decontamination of water, wastewater, and gas
    streams. (Electric Power Research Institute)
  • The FDA classifies PCO air purifier technology as
    Class
  • II Medical Device approving its use in
    healthcare facilities.

Introducing
  • The AirGorilla

UV/PCO N-Duct Air Cleaner Technology so powerful
it is used aboard nuclear submarines to clean the
air.
11
The AirGorilla Grid
  • The patent pending photocatalyst is a fibrous,
    3-dimensional, compressed metal-foam material
coated with a nano-technology titanium dioxide
    (Ti02).
  • This combination provides over
  • 20 times the reactive surface area
  • of typical PCO catalyst and provides
  • greater destruction of pollutants.
  • PCO is a contact technology
  • airborne pollutants that contact

  • the 187 square-inch Ti02 grid are destroyed.
  • No maintenance required. The grid is self
  • cleaning and self- renewing. It never needs
    replacing.
  • Provides maximum efficiency with negligible
  • resistance to airflow.

12
The AirGorilla Lamps
  • Powerful - Two 36 watt Dual Radiant 16 lamps
provides 5 times the destructive power of a
    typical 14 UV lamp.
  • Economical the AirGorilla lamps
  • use no more energy than a 75 watt
  • light bulb.
  • Warranted for 9,000 hours.
  • Easily changed not
  • necessary to unscrew
  • or unfasten unit to
  • replace lamps simply
  • open the electronic display
  • panel cover - pull out old
  • lamps - insert new ones.

17
The Competition
  • Ultra Violet Light
  • Constant exposure in the coil and drip pan area
is very effective in controlling fungal growth.
However, many factors can alter the effectiveness
of UV in the air stream. Some of which are
  • Exposure time (the air velocity and intensity of
the lamp must be coordinated in order to allow
    adequate exposure time).
  • Power level drops off considerably in very short
    distances drastically reducing effectiveness.
  • Moisture.
  • Particles.
  • Dust on lamps.
  • Maintenance is necessary.
  • UV, without ozone, is of no
  • value in reducing volatile
  • organic chemicals and their odors.

18
Air Cleaners That Generate Ozone
The Competition (continued)
  • Independent research on ozone has shown that at
concentrations below public health standards, the
effectiveness of ozone to control indoor air
pollutants is limited. (The North Carolina
Department of Health and Human Services Ozone)
  • Some manufacturers use misleading terms to
disguise ozone. Terms such as energized,
    trivalent, allotropic, super, saturated or
activated oxygen and oxygen singlets are used to
disguise ozone. Others use names such as pure
air and mountain fresh air to suggest that ozone
is a healthy kind of oxygen.
  • HEPA Air Cleaners
  • HEPA air cleaners can trap 99.9 of particles 0.3
microns or larger. Maintenance is minimal as the
filter can last for extended periods of time.
  • HEPAs do not reduce volatile organic compounds,
    gases, or odors.

19
Carbon Media Air Cleaners
The Competition (continued)
  • Carbon media air cleaners consist of a system of
micro pores that are tiny in size. Activated
carbon media are highly adsorbent and very
effective in reducing organic chemicals, gaseous
    pollutants, smoke and odors.
  • Required maintenance and cost of replacement
    media can be very expensive.
  • Ionic Air Cleaners
  • Ionic Air Cleaners generate positive ions that
unite with negative ions that are suspended in
the air. Several Ionic Cleaners can expose users
    to potentially harmful ozone levels.
  • An ion is any atom that has a positive or a
negative charge. A positively charged ion will
seek a negatively charged one to unite with, have
a glorious coupling and then turn into something
    totally new and available.
  • Particulates settle on to furniture, drapes and
    flooring.
