3Advisory Committee and Consultations
- Provincial Advisory Committee including all three
Ministries, BC Centre for Disease Control,
Community Nutritionists, Retailer, Educators - Consultation with the Agriculture Industry,
Teachers, Principals, Parent Advisory Committees
and Students
4BC School Fruit Vegetable Snack Pilot
- In 10 schools (rural, urban and suburban schools)
- Twice weekly local vegetables and fruit
- Goals and objectives
- To increase consumption of more BC fruits and
vegetables - To increase knowledge of vegetables and fruit in
students and their families - To develop projected costs and systems for
planning an expansion of the project across BC
5How the Pilot Project Works
- Contract with BC growers to source produce
- Retailer orders and distributes BC produce to
their retail stores/warehouses - Secondary distributor picks up produce and
delivers directly to schools ready to eat in
classroom bins - In-school coordinator delivers bins to classrooms
- Information for teachers, students and family on
how and where produce is grown and importance of
eating locally
6All of the products are BC grown except for a
mandarin orange in December Fresh whole apples,
pears, plums, greenhouse tomatoes and cucumbers,
kiwifruit as well as bagged sliced apples, pears
and carrots.
7Summary of the Pilot Project
- Benefits stated by children, parents, teachers,
administrators, suppliers and distributors
involved - Positive change in knowledge and behavior
- Fruit Veg variety eaten, self-reported changes
from children and parents and with at- risk - Evaluation results will assist in determining the
next steps in the pilot project
8Better health healthy BC agriculture
- up to a million pieces of BC fresh fruit and
vegetables consumed by BC kids (10 acres of
apples per week) - consume the largest kiwifruit orchard in BC
total crop - stronger rural communities

We have been trying to develop packages to
target kids, or moms who need ideas for fast
healthy snacks. This program targets these ideas,
it ensures us that people are looking for these
