2
Introduction
  • Hello, future explorers! Today is a big day for
you. You are needed in a very important
exploration navigation of the past. You are
needed to retrace the journey of Christopher
Columbus and enact the journey with other group
    members.

3
Task
  • Once you are finished researching the track of
Christopher Columbus journey, you should be able
to know where Columbus traveled, the destination
he finished at, the goods he traded, and have a
full understanding of travel through your own
skit done at the end of class.

4
Process 1
  • 1. First youll be assigned to a group of
    three people
  • 2. Each group member will work on their own,
in tracing the journey Columbus made, but will be
able to assist each other .
  • 3. Once each of you are done tracing the
journey, you then will separate into your
individual roles and research what Columbus did
once he reached his destination, what he traded
    and who he traded with.
  • 4. After you are finished with your research,
you will then break into your groups and do a
skit on the journey of Christopher Columbus in
    front of the class.

5
Process 2
  • Some helpful websites you make want to look at
when doing your research are as follows
  • http//www1.minn.net/keithp/
  • http//www.enchantedlearning.com/explorers/page/c/
    columbus.shtml
  • http//www.fordham.edu/halsall/source/columbus1.ht

  • http//www.shipsofdiscovery.org/columbus.htm

6
Process 3
  • While you are researching Christopher Columbus,
be sure to pay attention to details about his
journey and what he did once he reached his
destination. Looking at a globe or map will be
helpful in better understanding the voyage he
made to the New World, America.
  • There are also many details that will be
necessary when performing your skit and so this
list of questions to think about may be very
helpful to you. These questions may be printed
off and used as a checklist to what you should
    include in your skit.

7
Evaluation
  • You will be graded on account of several aspects.
  • You will be graded on how affectively you use the
given class time for your project, your usage of
the computers, how well you work in your groups,
how prepared you are for you presentation, etc.
  • A more detailed rubric for evaluation may be
printed off here and used as another guide in
    helping you complete this project.

8
Conclusion
  • Good job explorers! You have successfully traced
the journey of Christopher Columbus. You and your
group of explorers did a great job of learning
just what Columbus did. You know where he
traveled, the destination he arrived at, what he
did once he landed there, what he traded and who
he did his trading with. Because of your great
job in exploring, you may be asked to help again.
I hear there are some routing questions dealing
with the Oregon Trail. So keep up the good work,
    and keep exploring!

Credits
  • The pictures used on the making of this
multimedia project come from clip art and many of
    the websites aforementioned throughout the
    PowerPoint.
  • Google was the main source in finding information
on the websites of which you did your research.
  • The IST 396 web site is a helpful site that will
inform you of any updates on the multimedia
projects and also is a source for many other
    multimedia projects.

10
Introduction (Teacher)
  • This lesson was created as part of a project in
the IST 396 teaching with technology class at
    Oakland University in Rochester Michigan.
  • This lesson is designed to help students get a
better understanding of the exploration of
Christopher Columbus. The children are to map the
quest of Columbus and then research what he did
once he reached America. This will give the
children a a better realization of what life was
like in the discovery days and how the explorers
    of the new world lived.

11
Learners (Teacher)
  • This lesson is anchored around fifth grade social
studies and history. In its complexity, it should
remain for a fifth grade audience, but with a
much watered down version, it is also appropriate
for third and fourth graders as well.
  • Prior to this lesson, the children will need to
know who Christopher Columbus is and briefly know
what he did regarding America. The students will
also need to be able to search the internet.

12
Standards (Teacher)
  • Social Studies Standards Addressed
  • Recognize the relationships among the various
parts of a nation's cultural life.
  • Learn about the past and how it differed from the
    way we live today.
  • Learn about the thrill of exploration of a new
nation/country and the difficulty in doing this.
  • In this lesson, students will be using their
imagination and creative production when creating
the skit they will act out. They will also have
to use teamwork for the skit and bringing their
    research together.
  • Some good standards to look at when grading these
projects and the progress of the students
  • Standards for fifth grade social studies projects
  • H1.3.1 Describe the contributions of people from
various cultural groups to the development of
local, Washington State, and U.S. history
  • G3.3.1c Recognize the positive and negative
outcomes that can result when people of different
cultural backgrounds interact and understand how
an awareness of cultural traditions can help in
    cross-cultural communication
  • Illustrates presentations using a limited variety
of media appropriate to audience and purpose
    (e.g., charts/graphs, maps, illustrations, props)

13
Process 1 (Teacher)
  • 1. First youll be assigned to a group of
    three people
  • 2. Each group member will work on their own,
in tracing the journey Columbus made, but will be
able to assist each other .
  • 3. Once each of you are done, tracing the
journey, you then will separate into your
individual roles and research what Columbus did
once he reached his destination, what he traded
    and who he traded with.
  • 4. After you are finished with your research,
you will then break into your groups and do a
skit on the journey of Christopher Columbus in
    front of the class.

14
Process 2 (Teacher)
  • The lesson is organized for a one class lesson.
It should be done over one class period or day,
whichever you as the teacher prefer. The children
will need to do their research for one period or
day. The second day should be dedicated to
merging all the students findings and
brainstorming ideas for their skits. The third
day can be set aside for the rehearsal of the
skits or if the class is going well, the skits
may be performed by the groups on this day. The
    lesson involves single disciplinary and
    multidisciplinary motivation.

15
Process 3 (Teacher)
  • The students will be divided into groups of
three. They will begin the research of Columbus
journey on their own. They will then break into
their groups and compare the information they
found on Christopher Columbus and begin
discussions on the skit they will perform. Once
they have their ideas for the skit finalized,
they will be given time to rehearse the skit. On
the final day of the lesson, each groups will
    perform their skit.
  • No skills are need from the teacher, to teach
this lesson. Any level teacher can direct and
assist the students during this lesson.

16
Resources (Teacher)
  • Some of the possibilities
  • Class sets of books in the classroom
  • Computers for conducting research
  • Maps of the world
  • Costumes and/or props for the skit-
  • Some good websites for the children to look at
  • http//www1.minn.net/keithp/
  • http//www.enchantedlearning.com/explorers/page/c/
    columbus.shtml
  • http//www.fordham.edu/halsall/source/columbus1.ht
    ml
  • http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Columbus
  • http//library.thinkquest.org/J002678F/columbus.ht
    m
  • http//www.shipsofdiscovery.org/columbus.htm
  • There is only one teacher needed to teach and
help with this lesson. While the students are
researching, the teacher will be doing a lot of
helping with any computer problems. More teachers
or aids my be present when helping get ready for
the skits. The children will more than likely
need help with costumes and coming up with ideas.
The students will be informed that their skits
dont need to be very long, but they will need
help with the little that they do.

17
Evaluation (Teacher)
  • You will judge the students on various aspects of
    their project.
  • They will be judge on their performance among
groups, how well they used class time, how well
they used the computers, how creative their skit
    is, etc.
  • A more detailed rubric form may be printed out
    for your benefit.

18
Conclusions (Teacher)
  • Teachers should use this lesson because it is a
great lesson about exploration and learning that
the children are not exposed to. The children
will be excited to enact the traveling of
Christopher Columbus. This lesson gives the
children a chance to use their imaginations while
    learning at the same time.

19
Credits (Teacher)
  • In creating this multimedia project, many of the
pictures were taken form clip art on the computer
and the other pictures were taken from the
websites on the aforementioned pages on the power
    point multimedia project.
  • Google was the main source of information and
search engine in finding the links for students
    to engage in their research.
  • The IST 396 Site is a helpful site for many
other multimedia projects for students at all
grade levels. This site will also provide updates
to previous projects and information on the new
    ones.
